Fellow Opponauts,
In the coming months I will begin my journey to acquire my first toy/ongoing project that through ownership will teach me to weld, tune suspension, turbo and in general create the most fun vehicle for the woods and plentiful dirt roads around my house in rural Indiana. My vision is something more rally than rock crawler as may of these small 4x4's go. At any rate, I am looking for suggestions on what to buy. I have a budget of ~$3,000 and am thinking Samurai or Tracker to start wrenching on. What are your thoughts oppo?

I thought Trackers were the same as Samurais?

Samurai - VW TDI engine swap.

Geo Tracker because box flares, though if you want to avoid the whole "gay/hairdresser" stereotype you should probably go for the four-door instead of the soft-top.

Samurai, because no particular reason besides the name

Good Samurai's are tough to find but there are lots of options on Trackers, and yes they are basically the same. I have owned a Tracker and it was a lot of fun to work on, and yes they do float.

This^ is for sure an option. I have seen the engines on sale for ~1K. Later on down the line though.

Floating is always a plus!

Agreed, box flares are sexy. I think I will be ok avoiding the stereotype because of how covered in mud and probably doorless this will be 95% of the time.

Found out the hard way.

If you want rally type, look into Jeepspeed 2WD Cherokees, although that may be more desert racing.

I want the desert racing/Baja look for sure once I am done, very awesome. But I also want the general smallness of the Samurai/Tracker.

Nope, Trackers are the same as the Suzuki Sidekicks — Samurai's are a bit different. Don't worry though, depending on generation and location they can go by a stupid amount of names. For example, in Canada, the Geo Tracker was actually the Pontiac Sunrunner.
This is the Samurai, more Jeep looking:

10-4, I see it now. Definitely not the same.
