So on Saturday night, as I was performing my weekly task of shaming my teenage peers in thier eclipses, civics, and general riced out crapcans, I accidentally launched the stang. We were in a buisness lot we had never torn around before and it turns out this one isn't exactly level. There is a very definite hill right at the end of a long straight section. Around 1 AM, as I had my foot to the firewall, with an eclipse behind me, I saw the hill. Now I did my best to avoid it but I can't guess how fast I was going when I hit the crest and got a few inches of air before my beloved stang hit the ground and bottomed out. With fear in my heart I examined her the best I could and limped home. Today I jacked her up and there is no visible damage to anything except the exhaust tips. I'm just glad my teenage stupidity didn't break anything.
TL;DR
I'm a dumb kid and accidentally jumped my car racing though an empty lot, VERY glad nothing is broken.

You know where doesn't have hill jumps. The dragstrip. Hate to be that guy cause we were all dumb kids once. But c'mon.

Easy fix, just put Raptor suspension components on the 'Stang. They're both Fords, so they should be compatible right?

Ah, I deserve the berating. It was obviously dangerous and dumb.

I'm a little confused. If you limped it home wouldn't it be broken?

The evil part of me wants to go off on a rant about Mustang drivers doing stupid things; but I did that last night here. The good part of me is at least thankful that this Mustang wasn't damaged any more than just the exhaust tips.
Thank goodness it wasn't worse or I would've started a massive rant and possible flame war on why teen drivers shouldn't be given Mustangs :P

I agree with you on some points, yes, I was dumb, and yes, the nature of the Mustang combined with the nature of my being 17 years old is a bad mix. However, the car was entirely my purchase, and only my own money would go to fix anything that breaks. It's also not a prime specimen, low trim level 98 with many MANY miles on it and one of the reasons I bought it was to hoon the crap out of it and learn to fix what breaks.

A jumped a m3 once at ~145 mph. Not mine and I managed to slow down from 170 or so when I saw the bump. I still have no clue how I managed to regain control. The weightless feeling even though a fraction of a second just makes your heart sink.

Hey I'm with you on doing stupid things. I'm 18 and cut off a C4 Corvette with a Saturn Astra while merging onto the freeway. My dad's just waiting for something to go wrong when I get the ST next month I reckon.
We all make mistakes, and no harm was done to anyone; best case scenario. You keep on wrecking ricers! Just be careful about it. :P

Going to jail. Wrecking your car. Dying. Killing someone on accident.
These things suck.
We've all done stupid shit, and at no point in your life will going fast cease to be fun. But I implore you to carefully consider the possible negative consequences of your actions and to assess the risks of the current situation. I'm not going to make a blanket statement like "don't ever break the law" but if you're gonna think back on what you do later and say to yourself "that was dumb" it's probably not a good idea.
Also, you're seventeen, you will have many many opportunities for automotive hooliganism over the course of your life, provided you don't fuck it up. Best to play the long game.

Believe me, it has far less to do with the car than it does the driver.
In the same way that guns don't kill people, cars do. Some cars, like some guns, encourage misbehavior, but the reality is that reality is full of misbehavior and it is only our better judgement which separates us from the animals. Just because we have dangerous cars and guns it does not follow that we must misbehave with and abuse said dangers. Arm a pride of lions with automatic rifles and fast cars with all wheel drive and I assure you, they'll have no reservations or hesitations based on better judgement - it'll flat out be the end of all everything.
Machine gun wielding, drive-by doing lion prides. Seriously, it's only our ability to be rational that keeps us from this ourselves.
Beeeee freakin' haaaaaveeee.

He means that he limped home, terrified and with wet underthings.
The car was like, "For real?"
Relevant story; I used to ride horses a lot. Got tossed once, hard. Limped myself home in the saddle all the way the horse in question was like, "Pussy. Let's fucking do this."

That seems to be the general consensus. I hoped I could share my moment of stupidity and we could all laugh about it but I guess not. I understand, it was dangerous, it was dumb. I said so in my post. I fucked up guys, I figured why not share with some people who have probably been there. Guess I had better stick to the stuff I'm working on about my project Corvair.

I love Oppo.
If this were the front page, there'd be an equal split between replies like: "yeah bruh! Fuck the man! Murica!" and "Fuck you, you selfish danger prick".
But because it's Oppo there are like, many replies which are all: "We understand without condemning or condoning for the following logical reasons..."
Oppo is like your good friend and part-time mentor but it's also fucking weird.

No.
It's like this; it's not okay, but it happened and it's done and you know why you shouldn't do it again regardless of how fun it was.
It's like; hey, we've all been there at one time or another but you're just lucky nothing happened because not everyone or all of us were that lucky.
And the truth is that we're all, just a little, like; 10/10 would hoon.

Oh I know that it's got everything to do with the driver. It simply depends on the car he or she's driving and the audience around them that gets the better of their judgement.
Wish I could find a picture of lions doing drive-bys....

I looked.
Thing is, I knew kids blasting their parents K-cars around when I was a younger driver. Didn't matter if it was a Volvo or family van, they could misbehave in anything.
Oddly, it was these kids who I saw as teens being the most dangerous while most of us kids with nicer cars avoided trouble like the plague. By and large, it wasn't us getting behind the wheel after a party, though the kid in the f-body Camaro who hits someone and kills them isn't an uncommon story - it's usually a family car or van full of teens.

This was last night. What do you think?
![]() 02/17/2014 at 23:16 |

Strange, because being a young driver now, it's almost always some sort of used car or something bought by parents who have ridiculous amounts of money; used or new mustangs, chargers, camaros and even a mini cooper on one occasion comes to mind. I never see family cars or beater vans doing anything stupid.
Now I've done a 0-50 pull in my moms Windstar and I thought that was crazy as I smelled tranny fluid for the last 3 minutes of my drive home and I'll probably never do it again. For some reason I just love watching Mustang fail vids.
How times have changed I reckon?

I got air in my XC while pretending to be a pro rally driver. Bottomed out but the only damage was a cracked driveshaft boot. 14 dollar piece of rubber. Lucky. You're lucky too. Try not to do it again?

Honestly?
I think you're taking a narrow view. For instance, consider that it's not always Mustangs getting caught up and looking bad. Just as an example, given your choices (Porsche, Corvette and BMW) regarding cars which you never hear about having crashes due to asshattery, I present the following:
This kid earned notoriety pretty quickly, and he's not alone. From the kid who hooned the heck out of a 1 Series M Coupe, fresh from the dealership, and posted his asshattery on public, residential roads to countless over-zealous "drift" attempts, the Bimmer crowed is probably right up there with the Mustang guys.
And then you have Corvette, which is probably another one of the top picks for seeing-it-crash. There are dozens of videos, and an easy match for both BMW and Mustang.
Such as this gem:
And then there's Porsche, and that leads me right into another important aspect which I think you may be overlooking and that is access.
Mustangs are a cheap way to get access to decent power and torque. Thus, they are a popular choice and it follows that the more of them there are in the hands of potential asshats the more we'll see them asshatting. It's not inherit of the culture, it's a numbers game. BMW's tend to appeal to the same crowd, just kids with a little more money, and are the go-to platform for asshat antics for a different demographic of asshat but they're still a hugely popular and common choice.
Porsche isn't so much a victim of this stereotype as Porsche buyers tend to be older. Also, a Porsche is an expensive proposition even for someone shopping an E39. Because they tend to be bought by an older crowd and because the tend to command a higher price premium versus performance they tend to avoid the image of the douche-car. It's important to note, however, that there are plenty of videos of Porsche's pushing it too far.
So there are two important parts of the discussion which I, personally, feel that you've failed to address in your argument, or rather one which you've overlooked and one which I believe is invalid.
I hope that was a rational reply?

GT or?
![]() 02/17/2014 at 23:33 |

I'd argue that a huge, fucking massive, part of the equation is the fact that the demographics have shifted considerably.
I grew up in urban, sub-urban and rural settings and I can tell you that all of my friends got their licences as soon as they turned 16. Didn't matter what their driving needs were, it was a right of passage.
Now? I have a niece, nephew and another niece who're all at that age who either don't have licences or refuse to drive. Note, one is urban while another is suburban and the last, rural. Their story isn't uncommon, and they talk about their peers complete lack of ambition in this regard when I try to urge them on. This is in part due to the fact that increasingly parents are chauffeuring their children from place to place until they leave the home.
There's been a shift, particularly in given areas and income levels, away from teenagers ambitiously pursuing their licenses and automotive ownership. There are probably many reasons for this, some obvious while others debatable, but yeah... I'd tend to agree that 1.) Times have changed and that 2.) The times, they are a changin'...

Hey guys, am I too late?
![]() 02/17/2014 at 23:36 |

Well...
That was certainly one hell of a reply! I definitely don't doubt that I was being unfair or unreasonable. When I said that I never saw any BMWs, Porsche or Corvette do anything stupid, I was generalizing it to what I see in my area; generally, I always see mustangs in my area do stupid things and that was the basis of my rant. If I actually wanted to type up a well written and logical rant, I wouldn't have done it for fun.
The fact that Mustangs can be attainable by just about anybody is the real reason why they're seen the most doing stupid things IMO. I definitely agree that Mustangs and BMWs populate the majority of asshat drivers, no doubt, and I'd actually like to see some vids or clips of Porsche's pushing it too far.
I know my argument was pretty awful with invalid reasoning and overlooking some ideas that I hadn't considered when typing it, but we all make mistakes. I completely agree with your statements above.

I agree and understand. I was lazy as hell, not getting my license until I was 17 while everyone else had their licenses and cars; driving me to and from places and having my parents take me from point A to point B. I didn't realize how big of a deal it was until I actually got my car then license and then I realized how much I was missing out on for the year I didn't have a car. It seems times may be changing for the worse. Bob Dylan did foresee this happening didn't he...

You'd be shocked about how many vehicles can be jumped without issue. Fords are some of the best in this regard. In fact ford engineers have a test they call the "WTF test". Every new ford must come from the factory being able to take a curb head on at 30 mph with no issues. The only exception I'm aware of is the mustangs with the dealer installed front splitter, mainly because it's too low.
![]() 02/18/2014 at 01:39 |

Damn really? That's impressive. Any idea how long they have been doing this test?

I heard it from an old salt engineer, and personally tested it out on my old 1997 ford expedition (including a cattle guard jump at 80 mph, yee-haw!) The weak spots for the SN-95 chassis is the need for subframe connectors and the flex the front struts experience with racing brake systems and really big race tires. Apart from those two issues which don't affect most owners, they are really stout.

I did that a few weeks ago in the M3. It was in a big, deserted mall parking lot with no one around, because safety first. Just found some little dip at about 80 and got up in the air a little bit. Had my buddy in the car, who flies FA/18s for a living, and he was scared out of his fucking senses, which made me feel good.

Be thankful.
The best lessons I've learned—the most impactful—are the ones where the potential loss risk (perceived after the fact) is the greatest.
In the first month of 2-wheel driving (150cc scooter, brah!) I was showing off in a parking lot at night and hit a speed bump at 35 mph, gained whatever air that is worth, subsequently landed with front brakes locked, flipped it, and skidded my body to a stop against a curb.
Wearing shorts and a t-shirt.
And no helmet.
A month of daily bandage changes and slathering silvadene over a couple square feet of my body was, in retrospect, a small price to pay.
Unfortunately, basic physics has to earn our respect sometimes, and respecting physics is not only more important than seeking the respect and admiration of others, it's far more beneficial.
