Ever have a song that you really like, and then hear a cover of it that just blows you away even more?

I really dig this version of Crowded House's "Fall At Your Feet" by Boy and Bear.

I can't really say one of those is better than the other. I like them both the same amount, for completely different reasons.

"I need your love: - Calvin Harris.

Original - Not bad, but repetitive in terms of other songs he's done. The lyrics do a lot to make it stand out.

Cover - FUCKING. MINDBLOWING. Acapella EVERYTHING! Two talented beatboxers/human bass machines give a great background sound to three very talented voices. Pentatonix are absolutely amazing.

Johnny Cash is overrated. Yea, I said it. And I stand by it. Nobody* gave a shit until he died.

*Some loyal fans did give a shit, and I respect that. But when "fans" come out of nowhere after somebody dies and make him out to be a legend, it just ruins it for the people who were indifferent before.

You're entitled to your opinion and I respect it.

Here is my rebuttal :

Well, I see somebody's already posted Johnny Cash's cover of Hurt , so here's another one.

Now, I love Soundgarden, but listening to Johnny Cash's version of Rusty Cage after listening to the original Soundgarden version is like that scene in Kill Bill Vol. 2 where Beatrice Kiddo is fighting Pai Mei. Here's one of the world's deadliest assassins getting her ass handed to her by an old man with gray hair and both hands behind his back and he isn't even sweating. That's the difference between the two. Yes, Soundgarden can rock, and they can rock hard, but Johnny Cash is the master in this dojo.

It is partly cause I hear that damn "One piece at a time" song at every car show I go to, and partly cause (to me) he sounds like any old coot who drinks and smokes and knows basic chords on a guitar. As opposed to Hendrix, Clapton, and Stevie Ray Vaughan who can make a guitar do things most people can't. It's the same reason I can't get into Bob Dylan. He's a poet who knows some chords. The written lyrics are good, but when he sings them... Most of his songs are made tolerable by other people.

But that's just my two, maybe three, cents. Agree to disagree. Different strokes for different folks. I'm not judging you based on your tastes.

And I'm not judging you, I was just looking for a reason to post that clip.

That was really excellent. I am now going down the rabbit hole of finding the original, plus other songs by Boy and Bear. They've got a great sound, and I'm always looking for new music. Thanks for the tip.

Here's my submission.

The Kinks, The Village Green Preservation Society. Good song, great band. I mean, it's The Kinks.

The cover by Kate Rusby. I've always had a spot in my heart for the Irish/Celtic/folk sound, and this woman finds places in my musical self that I didn't know existed. I absolutely love her voice. This comes from her album Awkward Annie .

My jaw dropped while listening to that. I started to look for their other stuff, too. It makes me want to listen to the rest of the album it came from, which was a bunch of artists covering songs by Neil and Tim Finn.
