I know it's a chevy of some sort, with a hood like the car pictured, and it's been sitting under a tarp in a shed for as long as I've been alive. I'm trying to mentally make sense of how much work would have to be put into it.

It doesn't have to be done right away, and it's not going to be a picture perfect show car. More of a car to really learn about how to work on cars myself. I'm assuming it's going to need quite a bit of stuff, so I'll make a list and you can tell me what I'm missing.

-rebuilt engine, with new gas/brake lines

-axles/transfer case need rebuilding?

-wheels/tires

-brakes/brake pads

-new struts/leafs

-axle hubs?

-new/re-upholstered seats

-I don't really care about paint, as I'd be going for a rat rod/lead sled kind of look, but possibly body rust patches?

-new light bulbs/glass

-I believe it has all the glass and trim pieces

Anything else I'm missing?

Depending on where you live, the frame and other non-visible parts could be way rustier than the body panels. So look out for that.

I live in southern ontario, but the car is up near the ontario-quebec border. I'd definitely look at the frame before deciding on taking it

I love the look of these. Much preferred over the Tri-Five cars.

If it's been sitting forever, the interior may be a haven for mice or other critters. And any gas left in the tank will have turned solid by now

I would assume so, in a box somewhere. It's my uncle's, and I believe he's the original owner.

Remember that the SBC didn't debut until '55 so most likely if it has the original engine you will be working on a stovebolt six. Parts are available, but probably not at your local parts emporium.

My wife's supervisor has one. When it runs (I've seen it run twice in the last year) it runs rough, it has weird "old car only" issues that make me laugh, etc etc. He told me once that unless you have the money to do a full-out no expense spared restoration, it'll be an aggravation and a money pit that'll Nickle and dime you to death.

Like I said, I've seen him drive his twice and it otherwise sits in a garage....insured.....tagged.....taking up space....etc

Damn, definitely don't want a money pit, but then again, all cars are in some way

you will most likely have to replace every rubber part: hoses, bushings, seals, and so on. The shocks will all need replacing, brake cylinders, radiator, it's probably 6 volt, you might want to upgrade that, master cylinder most likely bad, flush all the fluids of course, hopefully the gas tank isn't rusted out. fuel lines, brake lines, check the play in the steering box, repack the wheel bearings and replace as necessary. You know, all the moving parts. Its quite an undertaking to bring back a car that has been sitting that long. I've done a few and it always seems to be more than one would imagine.
