When we think "supercar" certain marquees come to mind: McLaren, Ferrari, Lamborghini etc… But what is a "supercar," how do we define it? Is it about top-speed? Exclusivity? Overall performance? I think we can all agree that a "supercar" does things regular cars do but in a superior way.
The thing is most supercars are only superior to other cars when we look at a vehicle's basic functions of: acceleration, cornering, and braking. Ferraris, Lamborghini's and the like can out run, out handle, and stop shorter than the vehicles that mere mortals drive. But people don't purchase cars just based on the primary functions. Buyers want luxury, features, and space. What if there was a car that excelled both at the primary in addition to the secondary functions of: cargo volume, passenger capacity, technology, and luxury? That my friends would be truly "super."
There is only one car for sale in the US that shatters the expectations on both the primary and secondary front...the Mercedes E63 AMG S 4matic wagon.
Primary functions: It will go from 0-60 in 3.4 seconds, it has a top speed of 184mph, can stop from 70mph in153ft, and throw down .97g on the skidpad.
Secondary functions: It can seat 5 comfortably, has a bevy of creature-comforts and technology, such as heated and cooled seats with massage, navigation, adaptive suspension, and it with the 4matic all-wheel-drive it will even handle inclement weather. Finally, with a cargo hold of 57.4 cu/ft it will swallow practically anything.
What more could you want? Ok, a third pedal would be nice…if rowing your own is a must you can still find one of these around-
Sadly, Cadillac has discontinued its "supercar." Maybe this is why Europeans get all the great "supercars," because they understand the concept better than most Americans.
Of course people don't buy "supercars" because they are concerned with the secondary functions. You don't get a 458 for it's trunk space, you get it for the sound, the look, and the speed. While the E63 AMG doesn't invoke the same "passion" as the prancing horse, I still think it deserves a place among the greats. But I am a little biased.

American car buyers are pretty fickle and trendy. Give it a few more years. Ugly crossovers will go away, and wagon will make a big come back.

Wagons won't come back in a big way until the Government changes how it calculates CAFE compliance - SUVs are light trucks, (and don't "count") wagons are cars.

It's easy to look at the Mercedes wagon next to a 458 and say well of course you would take the Ferrari. But really you wouldn't, because you can't drive that car. It won't fit your family. It won't haul your stuff. It draws annoying crowds and shouting pedestrians and bad drivers that want to rubberneck and veer into you. You're afraid to park it anywhere. You have to cram yourself in it and crawl out of it. It costs a fortune to buy and even more to maintain. So actually you would take the Merc, and you'd probably love it, even if everyone else who never gave it any real thought questions your decision.

I really hope you're right. I think the 'sportback' look as opposed to a traditional wagon will win people over. I've always loved wagons, I hope to have more in the NA market soon.

One major omission from this article's brief mention of passion that a "supercar" generates...a $100k+ wagon simply does not generate the same passion (from the masses) the way a true supercar does many years later. Look at an older supercar such as the Lamborghini Countach, (to name only one of the past greats) - many of us had posters of these cars on their walls when we were young (and some maybe even into adulthood), and these cars still gather crowds any time they're driven, despite unimpressive performance by today's standards...this is what passion over a supercar and it's styling does, and what cars like Ferrari 458, McLaren, etc. will still have decades from now. This wagon will not be significant 20 or 25 years from now when it's performance edge withers of old age, and only the purest M-B or wagon enthusiasts will notice it. This is a super car in the literal sense due to it's superior capabilities (and current desirability), but is really just a super appliance, or super daily driven grocery getter for those with the means.

Aren't musclecars supposed to be cheap, simple and have more power than the chassis can take? These have none of those qualities, with an enormous price tag, luxo interiors and Nürburgring-tuned suspension.

A couple of you decided you like station wagons and try to brainwash everyone else into liking them... Sorry, not happening. The only time I ever considered a station wagon was when the Dodge Magnum was around. It just had a mean muscle car kinda look and I figured it would have looked great with some really fat 5 star rims on it.. I ended up buying the 300 instead....
Yeah, the thought of a vehicle with room and storage space is great, but if that is the criteria you are looking for, then a mini van would be better......... Oh, you don't want to drive a mini van cause it's what a little old lady or soccer mom would drive... Same goes for the station wagon. The mini van of course isn't as fast as the wagon you mention, but what you give up in acceleration is tripled in comfort. Some are actually faster than you would expect also.
You say you would pick the wagon over the Ferrari ? Why ? Because you have a wife and a kid or 2 and they won't fit in the Ferrari. STUPID EXCUSE. Your wife already drives a vehicle that you all fit in. When it is just you and your wife, you and your kid, you can take the Ferrari. When you all go out, you can take her bitch mobile aka wagon. Single... Ferrari.. Going out with 3 friends ? I bet the other 2 or atleast one of them has a Sedan. Single with a kid ? Ferrari.. Only 2 of you and now you have an excuse to not put other people's kid's in your car.. No room.. The kids will just break things in your wagon. Single with a kid and dating ? Now it get's tricky, but still Ferrari. Chances are if you are dating it means you get out without your kid from time to time, so it's just you and your date. When you have your kid, she probably has her kid or two with her also and I bet she has a large vehicle. Now you are going to have to ride with her and hope she has a nice ride. Single with 2 kids ? Now the wagon makes sense, but you must be doing pretty good to be shopping for a vehicle at this price. Might as well buy a new Corvette AND a crew cab truck so you can still play when you get the rare opportunity to get away from the 2 kids
I have a son and at one point was dating a girl who herself had 4 kids. I still manage to drive a convertible that really only fits 2.

Ferrari FF is daily driven by the same tax bracket as new owners of the e63 estate and although the back seat is less comfortable than the merc the front seat can accomodate taller folks. I have driven them both for extended test drives and not only is the ff more comfortable for the driver you can also choose the spec significantly more. The amg is loaded and you can only get it in one interior color and cannot delete sunroof which the ff has tons of options on interior and glass roof or not. They each have similar economy and both awd and sound awesome. I just find the ff to be a bit more Super. Finding a low mileage example for 220 or so might actually be the better 3 year buy as well with the 70k mile warranty you could probably unload it at a similar price point where the merc probably drops 40% over the same time.
![]() 02/09/2014 at 11:02 |

Do the back seats fold down?
Hatchback is also debatable. That's just a sedan without a trunk. Sure it's fast. And it will haul some stuff. But not as much stuff as a wagon.

I'm seriously not trying to be an ass here, but this is such a typical Jalopnik post. I liked it, and I like big ole' V8 wagons (I have an S6 avant with a 6speed swap) but who're we kidding? Americans don't like station wagons. They used to. But now they like ugly, underpowered CUVs.
Wagons will come back, the reason they left is because adults of the 90s started relating wagons to their parents and wanted to move past that image. Well it'll happen again but let's not kid ourselves into thinking that most Americans buy cars based on practicality and let's also not kid ourselves into thinking that there is any one perfect body style. The biggest error of our times is our collective disdain for the manual transmission, it's viewed as the "cheapo" option when in actuality it's just as luxurious as an autobox. But how many people own an MTX, even on Jalopnik? If I had to wager, it'd be less than 50% maybe even less than 35%.
Oh yeah, diesel diesel diesel, brown brown brown. Those are the magical enchantments needed to keep the trolls away right?
![]() 02/09/2014 at 11:06 |

Agreed. Wagons are cool and they have a niche in this world, but they're not the end all be all. A lot of faff on Jalopnik. A lot of faff.

I don't understand what is going on. Yesterday someone tried to tell me that a BMW E60 M5 was the last great supercar. Now it's a wagon? The only right answer is amazingly kick ass vehicle and within the realistic budget of the average buyer.
Correct answer is Corvette.

The standard RS models come with air suspension, they're basically muscle cars with some handling ques. Sure you could opt for the optional hardcore suspension but it's so rough that most don't opt for it. Do know that the Panamera tested is $70K more then the RS7. T
![]() 02/09/2014 at 11:29 |

I'd peg the number of MT wagon owners on Jalopnik at 1% of total readers or less. Nobody actually steps up to the plate and buys them.
I also support this article. Wagons may be disastrous to sell from a profitability standpoint, but the E63 Wagon is a formidable machine.
![]() 02/09/2014 at 11:33 |

The Panamera is also on air suspension and it is fantastic on the track and road. Yea but the only option you need is the sport package the rest are just luxury items.
![]() 02/09/2014 at 11:35 |

I'm glad to be a part of a 1% that makes me happy.
but yeah it's a lot of faff on this site. Everyone here apparently wants a stripper 5 series wagon with a diesel and a 6 speed in brown. Yet on oppo everyone has a dsg or autobox equipped 4 door sedan from one of the volume brands in a varying shade of black or white.
![]() 02/09/2014 at 11:43 |

All the inconvenience of driving a full-size sedan(compared to just getting a 2 door 2+2 seater which is always noticeably shorter), but none of the rear seat accommodations, just like the CLS and 6GC. Brilliant!!
I'd pass on poking fun at the coupe-like sedans if the topic of this oppo didn't point out the secondary functions. Just go sit in the A7 and tell me it's comfortable for 3 in the back.
![]() 02/09/2014 at 12:02 |

I heard this is quite practical (ish) ...but I'm also a fan of wagenzillas
![]() 02/09/2014 at 12:04 |

Part of the problem is that MT wagons have become unicorns in many parts of the US. If I was in the market for a car and I came across a manual wagon at a reasonable price, i'd have it in a heartbeat. But, since they haven't been popular for 20 years, and the people that do have them love them too much to get rid of them, the ones that do come up for sale are usually ridiculously priced. I have seen a few nice, affordable examples, but never when I'm looking to buy a car.
![]() 02/09/2014 at 12:11 |

To be fair, you'd need a Turbo or Turbo S to outpace the RS7, and both models are considerably more expensive.
![]() 02/09/2014 at 12:14 |

you have to do what I did.

I dunno about you guise, but when I see a super-wagon (which is never - this is the states we're talking about), I get more excited than if I were to see a 458 or the likes. But that's just me. I have a severe, severe attraction to wagons. As should you.
![]() 02/09/2014 at 12:24 |
|
Yes, and that is something the head2head touched on as well. The Audi's motor is fantastic and so is the price. But when you spend the extra money to get an RS it should act like an RS. Sure the Panamera is either more expensive(turbo) or slower(gts) but either model is a true drivers car and you will soon forgets about the RS7's 1/4 mile time when you are actually driving a Panamera.

Might not be so low if you consider 5 door hatches to be wagons. I just bought a Vibe GT in 6-speed, 8,400 RPM trim, so we're on an upward trend.
That's how statistics works, right?
![]() 02/09/2014 at 13:01 |

Love the E63 Wagon… but would not call it a super car at all. Supercar is about the potential. Potential 'Ring time. Potential straight line dominance. Potential of selling your left testicle for it. And finally, potential ass. Not that any of this is ever realized - only for the rare drivers will it ever come close. But its the potential that defines the word "super car."
Now, would I buy a super car as a daily driver? No. I'd buy the E63. But I still don't consider it a super car.

You waited until the end of your post, then bring up the option of a Corvette and a truck? Anyone who can afford a Ferrari can afford a 2nd car. In fact, the Ferrari is usually that 2nd car, and a car like the E-class wagon is the primary car, because trucks drive like garbage.

I can't post on Oppo (I'm guessing I've gotta schmooze up to someone, but heck if I know who), but I'd love to see someone post a poll here that asks what people DD and what they have for a project car, if anything. I personally DD a 5-speed Escort wagon, so I guess I'm part of the 1%. Project car will [very soon] be a Jeep, is currently a Goldwing.
While the wagons in this article are enticing, I am never buying myself another automatic DD. I made that mistake a few years ago, and regretted it sorely. I had the car for about 5 years, so yes, I did give it a fair trial. If that means I can only get 15-year-old FWD's, so be it, it's worth the sacrifice to have a manual tranny.
![]() 02/09/2014 at 14:12 |

exactly. automakers don't care about you. they care about bottom lines. buy the car and they'll keep making em. Merc still makes the E63 Wagon on principle alone...otherwise it wouldn't exist right now either in the US.

Likely if you can afford the Ferrari you buy both or more likely the Ferrari and an escalade.
Sport Wagons are for those who can only own one vehicle due to space constraints. And that is far more likely in Europe than in North America.

Love your posts Tom, as you must certainly know by now. However, that merc is quite the ugly duckling compared to its European brethren. We aren't going to win you reelection with cars that do not inspire. Chevy has this business model down solid, and Toyota to an extent that they haven't produced a car worthy of lust for over a decade, not including subsidiaries. They give "us" a car we say "we want" and don't bother with the fact that it has some undesirable quality like looks or name or stigma or any of the other human reasons why we don't all own camrys. The last CTS was the perfect example of what not to do in my opinion. A luxury wagon and coupe that were best described as "quirky".
Try to find an old E46 wagon for sale and you will quickly realize that an attractive, well put together wagon is a desirable creature. It may not sell like hot cakes, but as people size down from SUVs, the player in the game with the most years producing attractive wagons will come victorious.

I agree completely... I am usually the first to complain when someone says why buy $____ car when you can afford 2 or 3 of these instead.... Definitely wasn't my point. The writer wrote this as if they can only have one car so they choose a wagon of all things.
I personally don't like trucks, but the writer also wrote this is the sense that they wanted a vehicle for the track and a vehicle with room to put things in it... Trucks are good at moving things.
You didn't seem to read this to well, because he didn't say he would have the Wagon as a second car to compliment the Ferrari... He said he would have it INSTEAD of the Ferrari... one or the other... either or.. and for him the wagon wins... It's just for all the wrong reasons
Also, you did say usually, but I know people who have unpractical vehicles as their sole means of transportation. . Some people live a little beyond their means and buy a Ferrari just because they feel they can with that home equity loan and then can't afford a 2nd vehicle.. Where I live at I see people driving Lamborghinis and Ferraris to Winn Dixie.
