Claiming that the Camry Hybrid is as fast as an Si. Wat? I guess some people are still thinking the Si is a joke. That's cute...

What's Autoblog? :p
No really though, you gotta remember, hybrids with their electric motors got a lot of torque at zero RPM, and a non-hybrid Honda four sucks at torque.
T-O-R-K, you know, the other white meat?

Of course its as fast!!! Just as fast (give or take 1.2 seconds) to 60... give or take.. oh wait, 1.2 is alot of time in 0-60 terms... How in the world would they think they're just as fast O.o

People on Autoblog
I think I found your problem right here. If you want reasonable, informed debate about cars Oppositelcok, followed closely by Jalopnik is where you want to be. Autoblog is somewhere on the list down around Youtube.

Yeah it's possible that the 0-60 time for the Camry Hybrid is faster.
But if so it wouldn't mean it's the faster car. I know which one I'd want to drive around a track.
![]() 02/04/2014 at 20:24 |
|
Yeah. But I mean that torque is not much from the small motor/battery and the car weighs 5-600 lbs more. Plus the recorded time for the Camry is 7.2. A second behind...

People think the Si is slow for some reason.
![]() 02/04/2014 at 20:26 |

0-60 difference of .3
So....yeah....The Camry is damn near as fast.
If you have not driven one I suggest you do, they are great cars.
also the tundra is faster 0-60 than the Civic, as is the Sequioa
![]() 02/04/2014 at 20:27 |

That's OK because greenpeace sponsorship decals add 1000 hp
![]() 02/04/2014 at 20:29 |

.3? The Camry hybrid is on record at 7.2. The Si does it in 6.2. More like a whole second...

Ppl on AB don't know how to math very well.
I guess 1.2-1.4 seconds is within the margin of Autoblog error?
![]() 02/04/2014 at 20:30 |

Not what I saw, maybe I saw the wrong stats then.
Still the Tundra and Sequioa are a match for the Si.....which is odd.......

It's not super fast or anything but its definatly not slow, even the less sporty civic's can be quick.. one of my buddies DD's a 4 door SI with 240 N/a hp..at a mile high, so probably over 300 at sea level, it's pretty b/a.not a b/a however as his 522 hp CRX but that's not a DD, lol
![]() 02/04/2014 at 20:40 |

That's a big margin lol. When you're taking about 6-7 seconds tha represents a 15% error.

I mean they've both got a 5.4 liter V8. Not outside the realm of possibility.

That sounds awesome! One day I wanna get mine up there too.

The Civic is a sports car, the Camry is not that, never was sold as that.
The trucks have double the weight, so them keeping up with a sports car is impressive.

The 88 Prelude 2.0 Si went 0-60 in 9.2 seconds. Maybe they meant that, haha.

We've moved up quite a bit lol

I actually just saw that the Camry does it in 5.7. My apologies, that's the V6.
![]() 02/04/2014 at 21:32 |

Still for an typical car.....that is fucking impressive....
I have had way too much fun in those things when I'm at work.
![]() 02/04/2014 at 21:37 |

Oh god I can imagine the economical Camry drag races at the stop light. 0-60 in 5.7 seconds and great fuel mileage, it isn't the best car on Oppo but it's a damn good one.

We did a lot of dumb stuff at the last dealer I worked for....I was in a rental Sienna, someone else was in a rental Camry V6...
The sienna was slightly faster, but I was also kinda balls out in that thing.....the other kid was nervous.
![]() 02/04/2014 at 21:46 |

Balls out in a Sienna.
A combination of words the English language never accounted for.
![]() 02/04/2014 at 21:47 |

Well it just happend haha
I can't wait to work tomorrow....snowy and I have access to Mustangs, Shelby's, FR-S's's's's's's and all sorts of trucks
![]() 02/04/2014 at 21:51 |

Sienna.
Snow.
The world needs this to happen.
Imagine your coworker in a Mustang as the R8 and then you come from the back in a Sienna in the 911's position.

People consider the Civic SI some kind of sports car? It handles well, but other than that it's a lot of meh
![]() 02/04/2014 at 21:54 |

With an AWD Sienna.....I can make this happen......
I will "borrow" keys from the new car section and see what I can do to re-enact this....what mustang shall we use....Super Snake? GT500? Just a GT? or the V6?
Or should I swap the Ecoboost into the stang.....
![]() 02/04/2014 at 21:57 |

but which one FEELS faster?
![]() 02/04/2014 at 21:57 |

Between the trucks and the Civic?
The truck.
Trust me.
The TQ those make is impressive and throws you into the seat.
![]() 02/04/2014 at 23:16 |

yeah, I don't know why that is. It does not have high specific output- no turbo, but at the end of the day its just as quick as the GTI and most competitors. For what it matters- it is quick enough to be fun. I owned a mazdaspeed3 before my SI. I have autocrossed them both- I do not miss the power.
![]() 02/04/2014 at 23:32 |
|
The specific output on the 2006-2011 versions is really good. 98.5hp/liter. That's pretty much unheard of in today's market for an N/A car.
![]() 02/05/2014 at 00:33 |
|
True. I was referring to the current car with 83 hp/l from a 2.4. It is a much flatter curve I believe though.
![]() 02/05/2014 at 07:10 |
|
True. And the flatter curve may make it feel like it has more pull, but it's only faster by a couple of tenths. I would have been interested to see what would have happened if they'd kept the K20 and focused on weight savings.
![]() 02/05/2014 at 15:10 |
|
Because it is.
It has been left behind by all of it's old competition. Back in 2000, the Si was fast. Since then, it has barely improved while its rivals have revolutionized the compact sporty market.
Match the Si against the Mazdaspeed3, VW GTI, Focus ST or any other assortment of FWD sporty cars on any street, drag strip or road course and you will see just how slow it is.
Also, my wife's 2008 Toyota Rav4 V6 has identical 0-60 and quarter mile times.
![]() 02/05/2014 at 15:25 |
|
The Si is just as fast as the GTI and only a couple of tenths behind the ST. Both of which are more expensive by a couple grand when comparably equipped. The Speed 3 is the only one that beats its performance for price. And once the new one comes out that won't be happening.
Sounds like you're the one who's been left behind.
![]() 02/05/2014 at 16:27 |
|
I'm pretty sure I didn't say "performance for price," I just noted that the Si was slow for it's segment. Sure, the base GTI is equally as slow, but spec the DSG and it crushes the Si.
The Si is not a bargain. Actually, none of the cars in the segment are. If you want a performance bargain, the car to get is the Mustang v6. It beats the Si to 60 and the quarter mile by at least a second and its base price is $5 less than the Si.
![]() 02/05/2014 at 16:34 |
|
Yeah, and you get a much heavier car with very muted handling performance. I've driven both, there's just no comparison in that type of car vs the Si.
![]() 02/05/2014 at 16:53 |
|
I agree that the Si handles well. Honda has a knack for dynamic balance (when they feel like doing a sporty car). The main reason I am adamant about saying the Si is slow is because I am disappointed in Honda. The Si should have at least 240 horsepower. They did a good thing when they introduced the K20Z3 back in 2006. That engine was a worthy replacement for the B16A2. They upped the displacement and power in the same stroke. The Si was known for high revving rowdy engines. Then they put that bullshit K24 in there and kept the power output the same. They knocked off over 1000 rpm in lieu of "midrange torque," and that hunk of crap still only makes 170 lb-ft. They joy of the Si was always winding it up to outrageous revs.
Just so you know that I'm not just some Honda hater, here is a photo of one of the best cars I have ever owned. My 2000 Civic Si. Fully restored from a bare shell that I bought for $500 to a better than factory new condition.
My only problem with the Si is that it doesn't pay respects to this awesome machine.
What they SHOULD do is bring that new turbo Type-R over here, but we all know they won't do that.
![]() 02/05/2014 at 17:13 |
|
I, for one, am not looking forward to turbo Hondas. They won't have hi-cam and they won't be a worthy replacement for the B-series. The new K24 is okay, I'm definitely not its biggest fan either. But with the bump in power to 205hp, there's no reason the 2014 Coupe shouldn't be able to do a 6 flat to 60. That's definitely not bad. And if that's the problem, then the Hondata reflash will give you 220hp and a 7600rpm redline.
I'm just saying. Disappointed in the new model or not (believe me I am too) doesn't make it slow. A 6 second 0-60 matches the DSG GTI too. And mine will do 6.4 (2008 Sedan), also a respectable time.
