My parents are thinking about a 5000 dollar so used car. Their sights are aimed at a Lexus and Volvos. I'm trying to find something good for them. I'm running out of ideas. So any suggestions?
Oh yeah, 4 doors. 2 doors won't work. GM and Chrysler are out of the question. Maltise era also. And here's a pic of a BMW 8 series, which you can get for 5 grand

Any other criteria than just four doors and not GM/Chrysler?

an 8 series for 5 grand is going to be a slow piece of shit
anyways, go for the volvo at least they have some character. You can probably get a early to mid 00's S60 for 5 grand.

Honda Accord is always a good choice.

We need more to go on, mate. What will it be used for? What are their priorities and preferences? What are their major concerns? Etc. etc.

What do you have against Maltese?
Unless you meant cars from Malta...
I kid, I kid.

Lexus LS400. They're surprisingly fast, quiet, and cheap.

Miata with two doors strapped to the trunk...?

an 8 series for 5 grand is going to be a non-functioning piece of shit

Some guy was selling his auto 8 series with the 12 banger on CL...crack pipe.

It's going to be used as my moms car (and I'll be driving it..occasionally) and their major concern is maintence cost.

The geography teachers car is also a contender. Now for some strong persuasion about German cars to my parents.

Maybe. There's quite a lot of these. I've been fighting the recommend.

Reliable. Roomy. Economic. Practical (it's actually a hatchback), and still decently fun to drive.

at least it will look good as it sits in the driveway not moving anywhere

My parents are still worried about mazdas...they had a 10 year old 626 ages ago and still are worried about that shitty cooling system...

e39 540 is the correct answer. It's unbelievable that you can get this much car in good condition for 5 grand. Also available in wagon form if you can find it. You could also go 4-door e46 330i, but the e39 has a V8, and is therefore better.

Volvos don't cost any less to maintain than BMWs. I've owned a 2001 S60 And a 2000 323i, both were great cars, both were expensive to maintain
![]() 02/04/2014 at 06:43 |

When it's working, perhaps. I'd stick with the 530i, though, because the M62TU has heaps of issues once you get into higher mileage (and thus the lower price range).

Run far far away from an 850ci. Coworker has one and it is indeed a slow POS. Constant money hemorrhage just to keep it running and not leaking.
![]() 02/04/2014 at 07:39 |
|
If their major concern is maintenance costs then they should stop looking at Volvos. Great cars, but every bit as expensive as the German cars to maintain. Even though you say GM is out of the question you might want to take a look at a first gen CTS. If they want something big, comfortable and cheap to maintain a Panther platform vehicle might be their best bet. Go find a used Town Car.

Have them buy this if it's nearby enough. You will never, ever find a nicer and more bulletproof car for under $5,000. It's also still a very modern car.

Seconded.
Your parents will hate you if you put them in a German car that spends as much time in the shop as it does in your driveway.
Disclaimer: I have always owned expensive-to-maintain German cars. But I am not a parent and a hoon.

Get two Miatas. 4 doors? Check. Reliable? Check. Cheap? Check. Fun? Track day, bro.

Um....The Mazdaspeed6/MPS was only available as a sedan. You could get the regular 6 as a hatch or wagon, but not the speed you have pictured.
![]() 02/04/2014 at 08:47 |

Someone should run a vin check on that thing. I'm trying to convince my cousin to buy it lol

My 05 v6 hatch took 4 years of regular autocross, road trips, commuting and 100k miles of regular heavy use with 0 issues that I didn't cause on my own.

Maltise era you say?
Malaise Era.

Find an old Civic or Accord that you can get for enough under $5k to leave room for a timing belt/water pump job which it could likely need depending on mileage.

3rd gen LS400's are pretty nice and they're too reliable.

Sorry, I live on the west coast...it'll cost me several thousand to ship it over here.
![]() 02/04/2014 at 10:59 |

True. I think the 8-series is one if the prettiest cars ever to come out of Bavaria. If ever there was a candidate for an LS-swap, this is it. Just to be able to drive it with peace of mind.
![]() 02/04/2014 at 11:58 |

Also four wheel drive, in total.
![]() 02/04/2014 at 12:40 |

Worried or prejudiced? Because the last '04 6 I used was pretty much solid in every way, cooling system included. Everything worked great. If they're just worried, they have nothing to worry about, assuming the previous owner did the required scheduled maintenance.
![]() 02/04/2014 at 12:42 |

I meant the regular 6. I was too lazy to find a normal 6 with that grill, as the last 6 I drove was a hatch with that grill.
![]() 02/04/2014 at 12:45 |
|
Lol, fair enough. I had a prefacelift v6 hatch for a while as well. Great car, and honestly a lot of fun after I added the sway bars, springs and better shocks.
![]() 02/04/2014 at 13:34 |

Prejudiced.
![]() 02/04/2014 at 13:39 |
|
Ah, gotcha. What other makes are they prejudiced against?
![]() 02/04/2014 at 14:00 |

The 8-series is one of those cars you should definitely consider paying more for. That said, depending on overall condition and given that I can do my own car work, I might consider one for $5000. And it has to be an 850, because 12 cylinders is half the point.
![]() 02/04/2014 at 15:19 |

I've had 4 e39s man, and I find that if you take good care of them their reputation as unreliable is greatly overblown until you hit about 200k. So you're right, low mileage is better, but you can get a damn good low-mileage one for 5 grand.
![]() 02/04/2014 at 18:23 |
|
Yeah...the thing is with these, a non enthusiast will mistaken as a car that costs a lot.
![]() 02/04/2014 at 18:26 |
|
They sorta like Bmws but worried about reliability, that too with other German manufacturers, they seem to think that volvos are pretty reliable, but it depends on which one you buy. The Mazda I'll be trying to persuade them. But the sedan, not the hatchback. They owned a matrix before but...some old lady slammed the side of the front wheel....
![]() 02/04/2014 at 18:27 |

How much more? Like base the difference off a corolla.....
![]() 02/04/2014 at 18:28 |
|
Yeah, but parents are worried about bimmers....
![]() 02/04/2014 at 18:30 |
|
No, no, no. I mean the Mazda 6 sedan looks like a sedan, but it's a liftback, like the original Tc.
![]() 02/04/2014 at 18:31 |
|
They aren't wrong, they do cost a lot...in maintenance! =þ
To be fair, they were $70,000 when new, which is the modern equivalent to $115,000. That's pretty damn pricey, even brand-new Corvettes don't generally sticker for either of those figures.
![]() 02/04/2014 at 23:17 |
|
That's probably for the best. Bimmers are like Heroin. Try it once, and you'll have an expensive addiction for the rest of your life.

Your folks will shit the bed the first time they get a 2000 dollar bill for some routine maintenance on a BMW.
This is boring advice...but buy the best 5000 dollar Taurus you can find.
