For the second time in 6 weeks, I've been robbed. Taking our car and our stuff.

A week before christmas, I was taking the car out of the garage and parking it in front of the house, to wait for my lady to get ready. And while unbuckling to go and close the gate, I heard a knock on the driver's window. 3 guys, two pistols pointed at my head. They took my wallet, phone, backpack (containing among many things, a swiss army knife I got from my grandpa) and even my glasses (which were pulled off my face).

Kinja'd!!!

Dammit, I'm shaking.

They took of with the car, my soon-to-be-wife's Hyundai HB20 1.6. In less than 30 seconds 3 teenagers with guns took of with most of my valuables. Things I've collected along years, thinking they'd last forever. The car and the phone had insurance, so it wasn't such a big deal.

We had moved to this house in September. It looked like a very, very calm neighbourhood. All ruined within seconds.

Fuck this. Fuck that. Fuck everything. I was desperate, stumbling my way back into the house. I didn't know what to feel, I just yelled to my fiancee to call the police.

The car was found hours later. No sing of my possessions, except my glasses, broken in the back seat. I still haven't recovered all my documents, and I'm getting married in 3 weeks.

Friday night, I was already home, my lady calls saying she's a few blocks away. I go open the gate, she drives in, when I reach to close the gate, guess what... two guys, two guns pointing at my face. Seconds ago I was having a beer on the sofa watching Anchorman, I had nothing with me. And while one guy was taking off my engagement ring, the other one was ripping my lady out of the car. The guy let the car die twice before making it out of the garage.

The insurance company had one of those locking devices installed. The car cuts the fuel if you don't press a hidden button within 20 seconds of starting it. So, the car obviously died in front of our house... now the guys were pointing guns at us telling us to unlock the car. We told the alarm was inside the car, and there's nothing we can do.

I thought the barrel of that gun and the terrified face of my lady would be the last things I'd ever see... but they took her purse and ran off to a Hyundai Elantra a few meters away. Another guy was there.

And guess what the police said? "These guys are far by now, no use for us here. We won't find your stuff anyways. And even if we did, they're minors... so they won't be arrested anyways".

That's Brazil for ya, guys.

Here's a picture of my cat for your troubles:

Man, that's awful. Good luck to you with everything. I would say to get the heck out of there as fast as you can, but I have no experience with anything like this.

That sounds terrible... I'd probably buy myself a gun if it were happening to me. Moving to a nicer neighborhood probably is out of the question too.

I have experience with neighbors that were just scum, but it's nothing like this.

Sorry man, hope everything gets better.

Everyone says its barbaric, and I've mentioned this before. Chopping hands off for theft in Saudi Arabia is not that bad of an idea... its a great deterrent. BTW, they only chop hands off for repeat offenders.

That's horrible. Are you guys planning on moving?

Thanks, man.

Yeah... within 2 hours of what happened on friday we were already firing emails looking for apartments (fuck living in a house where I have to stand on the street while parking or taking the car out) in a better neighbourhood.

I found a very nice apartment for a decent price, but the owner is a british engineer that bought this apartment years ago, but he was relocated back to England and wants to be paid monthly via PayPal, and he says he'll send the keys once he receives the deposit... weird... but I'll investigate this.

Yup. And it looked like such a nice neighbourhood.

Police said that because this house is near a large/fast avenue that has easy access to a slum area, it's a place that has a lot of crime because it's an easy escape.

We're talking with our real estate agent and with other people to see what we can find. We started looking within hours of what happened...

Buying a gun? not sure it,s a great thing to do considering they always seem to attack by surprize and are also armed with guns... Easiest way to get shot in these kind of situations is to pull a gun yourself...

Guns would be useful if the person had a knife or something. But as soon as the person in front is also armed, it becomes riskier than doing nothing.

We are very, very lucky to be unharmed. I think they just didn't do anything because of all the screaming and the alarm within seconds the street was filled with people.

I just had to write this somewhere to get it off my heart. I didn't even tell it to my relatives.

Hope none of you guys have to go through anything like this, ever.

That's good that you're moving. That British engineer deal does sound weird. I foresee keys getting "lost" in the mail.

Yep... I'm trying to figure a better way, so I can at least check this all out without having keys mailed and a lot of money wired.

Theoretically the building has someone elected to have copies of all other apartment's keys, at least that's how things work in Brazil.

The apartment looks awesome and in a great place... I'd REALLY like this deal to work out.

my grandmother had a similar situation earlier last year, she almost got robbed, just like that. minors knocked on her window, threatened to rob, she immediately ducked and hid her purse, pretended to grab a gun, threw it in reverse, and to her luck, her neighbor was arriving, and that scared the would-be thieves away, somehow.

Holy crap! She was also very lucky. Glad nothing happened.

I just wish something could be done about minors abusing this...

Yeah... whenever this happens I start questioning what's more barbaric:
- Saudis chopping hands off recurring offenders
- Hard working people being killed by minors, who leave "prison" 2 days later because "they aren't old enough to know what they did"

It's a very complex subject...

Nah, pretty simple to me. If a thug preys on the hard work of others because they're not dis-incentivized to committing more crimes due to a lax penal system, then the fact that there's no justice for the victims is barbaric. If you don't create a system where criminals have something serious to lose when they commit crimes, then why bother having a justice system at all.
