This was a prototype installed sometime in the 1930s at a railroad crossing in Grenada, Mississippi. It was along the Illinois Central's passenger line at a crossing where accidents were common. It was designed by Alonzo Billups and had neon lights that lit up the words STOP DEATH STOP with illuminated arrows which indicated the direction of the approaching train. Oh, and no bells...an air raid siren. Apparently it lasted until about 1970. And I bet some dopes would STILL run the crossing.

$1 says some elderly, eccentric hoarder has the remains stashed in his rotting garden shed.

Road signs these days need more skull and crossbones.
