What is the point of this? I like the i8, but was this really necessary?

Why?...just, why?
"There's no reason to be lifting up the hood unless it's in the shop."
I see a fluid bottle in there. I see things to check. There's a million things to look for when a mystery noise begins at 60,000 miles. I'm going to look.
I suppose the owners manual will say only three things. How to open the door if your battery is dead to get out (when would this be I have no idea), the BMW roadside phone number, and the app location to find a dealer when anything has to ever be thought about. I cant add washer fluid at a gas station by myself unless a dealer mechanic comes out to the gas station to help lift the hood. I guess if you can afford an i8, you can afford to have BMW wipe your own ass for you cause you gave up the ability to do anything else for yourself.

Get used to it. The more fancy we get, the more redundant shit we have to deal with.
This one cracks me up, though. (also in the Corvette) Manual release levers for the doors in case the electrical replacement for the manual release stops working.

I can see law suits due to BMW's design. Who in a panic is not going to just pull the lever? If it is broken all the time by your employees, it's a piss poor design.

Already happened with to guys in two corvettes and that couple in New Zealand.
As well as that poor girl who died of heat stroke in the BMW after her brother hit the door locks while she slept in the car before school..
They're fucking doors, people. Let them open.

A redundant mechanical weak as hell plastic lever? You mean like a handle that I can pull with the same force needed to lasso the moon and not break?

I don't understand why they just didn't make it where it lifts up.

Seriously, it's almost as if BMW is trying to make sure nobody wants these cars 5-10 years down the road, or like they don't want it to get that E30/E46 enthusiast love later on

Is it really?

Even if I were in the market for this kind of car, that hood bullshit would have me running off so fast.

Not just that, but if the car's electrics fail and you panic and break the door latch back-up, you're fucked. That is a piss poor design.

Yeah, I can see that being a serious problem for BMW if someone sustains injuries/death from that type of situation (a fire comes to mind)

At least this isn't a mass produced car like a Cobalt or Tahoe...

Yeah, he was sent that video by his sales rep. It was some agreement that the car stayed at the dealer for a week or something like that before he took delivery.
Convenient timing to do training, when someone orders a new toy that no one at the dealer has had time with before.

I think the primary handle should be manual for safety reasons...

I don't see why they decided that unbroken method was worth replacing.

Over-engineering and planned obsolescence. Also reminding havenots where they stand.

I don't know what I dislike more: the design choices shown in this video or the attitudes of some of the dealership employees. The griping and complaining really show professionalism during a training session. /s

They are probably irritated about the liability of the cars eventually being a liability in the service department.

Perhaps. But, given the attire, the questions, and the comments ("I'm not even gonna SELL this car...", which is the comment which really irked me.), I'm guessing these are sales folks. (Which is fine.) But, the griping and complaining among themselves seems to be distracting them from a real demonstration of a car which is very different than the 4-series they spend time with all day. Rather than being irritated, they can work on preventing the car becoming "a liability" by focusing on the delivery training session.

Well he isn't selling that car, because that is actually an Opponauts car, lol.
