And not a new driver, a 28 year old who's been driving for ten years. She thought it was the craziest thing that the car rolled forward instead of backward, and she kept accidentally hitting the brake with her left foot when stopping. She shifted into neutral once when she was accelerating, which was kind of startling. Other than that nothing eventful, just a strange experience. She even had to have the owner of the car shift it into park for her. Europe is weird.

Never ever drove an automatic (I've only got my licence 4 years ago though). And I think that in 23 years I've been on an automatic car twice : my godfather old C4 Picasso, which was a automated manual rather than a proper automatic, and a friend's father Q5, which had a DSG.

And I'm quite sure my father only drove 1 automatic car, which was the aforementioned C4 Picasso.

That's exactly how my wife is with autos (well except the putting it into park part).

She also hates hill start assist for the same 'it doesn't roll back' reason.

I think I was a bit older, and did most of the same things- though I did know how to put the car in park. Did she do the vague, absent minded grabbing for the stick thing too?

Awkwardness behind the wheel of an automatic is a sign of higher intelligence and good upbringing.

I'd kill .... well, maybe do minor bodily harm... for a car with hill start assist, it just seems like the neatest thing ever!

I had the same thing during my first time in an automatic. Well, hitting the brake with my left foot and wanting to grab the shifter. The same thing happened a few years later during my second time in an automatic, and again last year when I went to test drive a Touareg for fun. This, by the way, was my first time inside an SUV.

Driving an automatic is counter intuitive and uncomfortable when you're used to a manual.
