Welcome! To a new series I'm starting about cars that I randomly see and then think to myself "hey, those don't get enough attention".

We're starting this off with the '99-'05 A6, specifically the V8 models. Now before you run to the comments and yell "But the 2.7t is just as fast!", think about maintaing a decade old Audi with twin turbos. Then remember all of the V8 models get larger wheels, larger brakes and dem fenders ….

Kinja'd!!!

Thats right, not just the S6/RS6 got those. That my fell oppo's, is German subtlety done right.

In normal A6 form the 4.2L V8 came with 295hp and the same amount of torque. If you can afford to get the S treatment you get 335hp and 310lb-ft. Which drops the 0-60 by a whole second, to 5.7. But the absolute best thing about the S6 is that in North America you could only get it in Avant form . If you all don't go out and buy one just on principal now I'll be disappointed.

… Oh and lets not forget why V8s are always worth it.

So go and get one already!

Hubba, but those are still $20k right? Thats double the price of a S6.

I've always been a fan of getting the same engine in the bigger car.

A8 with the 4.2 from the S6, Legacy with the 2.5 from the WRX, etc ….

I thought BMWs had the D-bag drivers?

I think their issues are more related to parking.

I had a C5 a6 with the 2.7t and a 6speed. Getting the thing serviced was a nightmare. Almost anything that needed engine work, required the whole front of the car to come off. Not sure if the 4.2 is any better to service. I'd only get another one if it came with a warranty.

As someone who has had 2 C5 Avants and one of those 4.2 V8s in the family, I approve this message. And let me say, the 3.0 V6 is a wonderful engine as well. Plus, lighter=better handling.

Probably just as bad to service, but maybe more reliable? I'm no expert.

… and we've all seen photos like this …..

Lighter is better, for sports cars. In this application I'd argue for the V8. Either way its pretty big and the engine is hanging out in front of the wheels … so might as well have more power!

That 4.2 is lovely though. How much HP does it make in your car (those only came with the 4.2 in the U.S. right?)? I think its 340 in my dad's A8.
