What was the first car to be equipped with electronically controlled anti-lock brakes? Mercedes-Benz S-Class. How about the first car to be equipped with air bags? S-Class. Navigation? Again, the S-Class. The list goes on and on..
Mercedes-Benz is the go to brand for luxury and innovation. From SUV's, to convertibles and sedans, Mercedes is always near if not at the top of the charts for luxury, technology, and longevity. Now you can have your taste of German luxury with !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , all for the price of a moderately-equipped Honda Accord.
!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! is fast. Like, stupidly fast. Thanks to its massive 6.2 liter naturally aspirated V8 which produces 518 bhp, and 465 lb-ft of torque, once it finds traction it will shove itself along to 60 miles per hour in 4.5 seconds. All of which happens while 5 people sit in immense climate controlled comfort.
Since this is an S-Class, you obviously get every feature known (and unknown to man previously) in the year of 2008. Some of which include 14-way messaging ventilated driver and passenger seats, a 14 speaker, 600 watt, Harmon/Kardon stereo with two subwoofers, voice activated navigation system, bluetooth, and air suspension, all controlled through an 8-inch LCD that can also display DVD's and live TV. But wait, I'm not done yet. This car also has a panoramic sunroof, a power opening and closing boot lid, radar guided cruise control, lane keep assist, blind spot assist, and life assist. I may be joking about that last one, though studies do show that people that drive S-Classes heart's do beat 5-6 times slower than driver's of other cars. So, if you drive one you'll live longer.
This car has done 128,000 miles, which is high for the year, but I happen to know that this car was owned by a Mercedes-Benz employee that just traded it in for an SL63, and has been meticulously maintained. It has never been in a wreck and is absolutely spotless inside and out. Also, the naturally aspirated engines tend to be more reliable compared to their turbo brothers. So, as long as you keep up on regular maintenance, I expect many trouble free miles for one lucky owner in their future.
Someone please come buy this thing before I do. It's fantastic.
NOTE: The dealer's website currently does not have any images of this vehicle up as they just took it in on trade. If you want any more photos I took just let me know and I can email them to you.

Also the first car to place the gas tank above the rear axle for fire safety.

Interesting. I did not know that. Only if Ford had payed closer attention...

You were inspired by tonight's Top Gear ! I love that segment - Clarkson does an excellent test. Don't know if he's tested the latest iteration, but ... probably.

Hahah! Funny you say that as I was quoting the segment while I was speaking to the salesman about the car. A large smile came across my face when it came on tonight. I believe I may have murmured a " If I don't be damned... " Hahah. Such a good review on such a good car.

I was trying to figure out whether we'd gotten the Patagonia special yet on BBC-A - don't think we have, was the consensus.

And the car pictured seems to be an excellent bargain. I'd only want 4Matic, and would pay more for it.

Yeah, I don't believe it has shown here in the USofA yet. It premiered in the UK last Saturday and I have been looking online for it since with no results. I hope we get it soon as I've been struggling from TG withdraw far too long. These reruns simply aren't cutting it.

I would want it too, but MB did not begin to put 4Matic on it's AMG sedans until this year. You could get an S600 with a V-12 and 4Matic, though it carried an extra 17K premium when new.

So you just have to wait 6 0r so years for the prices to fall off a cliff and, to quote Kelly Bundy, VIOLA!
Shame about the 4Matic - I like the W221 more than the W222, and there are more likely to be bargains in the prior generation.
AMGtech - now with more recalls!

I don't believe that's accurate. Pretty sure the highest S that you could get 4matic on was the S550, not the 600. I don't think any of our v12 cars have ever been offered with 4matic (unless you count G65).

I have to disagree... I've replaced a fuel pump on an old ford ranger that had a gas tank sitting above the rear axle. Trust me, I remember this because it was a PITA to fix. Background: ASE cert. tech.

No, I have to disagree! 450SEL
I meant when he was talking about all the technological achievements of the S class (I sure hope the S63 isn't the first car to have airbags!)

Unfortunately, back in 2008, AMG S-Class didn't have 4-Matic.
If this had AWD, I'd be all over it.
Even though it's older than my S-Class, and I've never bought used...the price seems too good to pass up on...

At 128,000 miles, the repair and maintenance cost for the next three years will exceed the price of the car.

Meticulously maintained and spotless or not, it's still a used car with 128k miles on it. A new Accord will have new car reliability. This MB will not. The new Accord will have a warranty should anything go wrong. This MB will not. When something does go wrong with the MB, except to drop 4-digits on each repair. Granted, the MB is a much nicer car, but it's not going to last as long as a new Accord and you're going to spend a hell of a lot more money on repairs while you do own it. You'd be better off buying a new Accord and a new something-else-economy-car for the same money you'll spend on the MB in the long haul.

To be honest, I did take some direction from your columns only because I have never written anything like this before and you seem to do it best. I hope I did not offend you in any way as I never intended that to happen.

Very true, but as I said this one has been meticulously maintained and anything that went wrong has been either been fixed or replaced all together. I'm not saying this would be a cheap car to own, but it'd be darn sure nicer to own and drive than an Accord. Plus, even with it being 7 years old, it's still miles ahead in the technology department than mostly anything on the road today.

True. If this car had AWD it'd be the perfect car.
Buttt, you could just put yourself a set of Blizzaks on it and never look back! (Until you take a curve to fast and end facing the direction you'd just come from. But at least you'd do it in S-Class style and comfort!)

Maybe, maybe not. All depends on if you can do the work yourself and where you get the parts.
Getting this car would be a fun game of chance.

You may be able to buy that big Benz for the same price as an Accord, but god help you when it comes time to fix it. The cost of parts alone will probably force a second mortgage on your house, and induce fits of vomiting and gratuitous cussing to boot. (I don't think Mercedes actually makes any money when they sell cars. The repair bills more than make up for this, however.)

I hear ya...but I'm not keen (as I once was) to change tires from summer to winter! So, I like to just get AWD and be done with it...standard ultra-high performance tires for all-season usage. BTW, I was looking into trading in my A8L for a new one...and your article got me thinking about also looking into the S-Class. The new S-Class is sweet and all...but just isn't much of an upgrade from the last gen to warrant a trade-in (of my S550). Well, to make a long story short, I am trading in my A8L tomorrow for another A8L...but came across a great deal on an S550 that I couldn't pass up! So...I just signed the deal and faxed over the paperwork on a great car yesterday...a 2013 S550 4-Matic with 30K miles (high by my standards) for under $50K. It comes fully loaded...designo porcelain interior, 20" mags, Sport pkg., rear seat pkg, panaromic roof, rear power seats w/ memory, Burmester sound system...almost "the whole-kit-and-caboodle"! I'll be bringing to home on Fri...to "roost" next the to my 2010 S550 4-matic. This is the first time I'm buying used...so I'm glad that it is certified and there will be 3 years of warranty! With the money "saved" in buying a used car...maybe I should look into some "customizations" to get more power, hmm?
