On the most disappointing cars of 2014 someone posted the Datsun Go. One it the main complaints was that $8500 isnt that cheap. Da fuck? Do people not understand how inflation works? This fucker is cheaper than a 1989 Hyundai Excel in relative terms. But with cheap cars in general people dont seem to understand. Again adjusting for inflation the Excel in would have cost about $10,500 today. So with all the heightened safety requirements and electronics and what not the price has gone up only $2500 to the Mirage, the cheapest car on sale today. That really isnt that bad at all.

I'm with you on that - its quite cheap. But thats also kind of its problem with materials and the interior.
But I wouldn't mind paying a full $9000 for a set of features I'd expect from a new car in 2014. Or at least the option to add a trim level to make the car interiors of the thing tolerable (in my opinion)...

Yes, that's less expensive than a $5,500 Hyundai or $5,000 Yugo from 1986, and here's the bonus:
You're not getting a first year Hyundai or Yugo.

Interestingly enough the Go is only $300 more than the base model Yugo GV in todays terms.

I've noticed quite a few people don't understand inflation. People exclaim: "The BMW 3-series is so overpriced at 30,000!", yet the base 318 E36 retailed for that much new in 1995 dollars, or about $50k 2014 dollars. Same for all the sport compacts and sports cars people are drooling over. The Supra, 300ZX, and RX-7 cost almost $60,000 when adjusted for inflation.

Never said that part was good...
But I would guess the Yugo, almost identically priced actually, would have had a similar result.

Really? I was using the BLS's inflation calculator... shows a 1986 $5K Hyundai/Yugo at about $10.5K. Shit, haha, I see this was all in the original post.

The 1987 Yugo GV was just $3,390. So, dirt fucking cheap.

I must've misread your "heightened safety requirements" thing.

People understand inflation, but the reason they don't care too much about it is you cannot recover past sums of money to be used against todays values, nor can you 'freeze' your money now to spend it against future (presumably lower) values.
Relative to 1989 bucks, the Datsun go is a good value. Relative to 2014 bucks - the only bucks we're allowed to spend - it's really not. You're only a few grand away from getting something that won't kill you and your family in an accident, and $8500 will buy a much better car on the used market, maybe even with a warranty.

The Go isnt bound for US sales, at least I dont think. That was more for the Mirage/Excel comparison.

By 1998 I still knew someone driving an Excel. All Yugos had gone the way the art exhibit or been crushed:

OK, I have to admit, until now, I did not even know that Datsun re-existed. Now, I can only hope they re-introduce the 620 pickup...
