Is the Logitech G27 the answer? For me and my son, playing GT6 primarily.
Full disclosure: as much as I like rowing my own IRL, I usually pick auto in racing games...
Related: after many failed attempts to download and install recent updates, I deleted all my game data (not the save file) and started from scratch yesterday. After many hours of downloading, I was able to play for a few minutes last night! Got the MAZDA LM55 Vision Gran Turismo. Sounds so good.

if you want to go all out then sure but if your using auto most of the time then I'd recommend the Driving Force GT, it was the official GT6 wheel, has your typical sequential shifter and flappy paddles if you do decide to go ahead and use manual

though looking at prices for you the G27 isn't much more expensive over your side of the pond

I got mine last christmas as a gift from tjr girlfriend, and I can tell you I love it. Both the wheel and the pedals feel pretty good. The shifter is pretty nice, although I would love it to be a little bit more heavy, but hey, no complaints.

Looks sweet. I like the 3-pedal setup and stick. I imagine if this is for PS3 that you can get quite a deal now. Now all you need to do is make your own rig to hold it.

Yes, You can also adapt real steering wheels and shift knobs for it. They're just pretty expensive though.

Embarrassing story - a few days ago, I went exploring near the local computer centre to see if I could find anything interesting for my Secret Santa. I came across the Logitech store and found a G27 to play with. Unfortunately, I wanted to see how the gear lever responded to rapid shifts. I ended up accidentally wrenching the shift module off the table. Oops.

I was able to find one of these used for about $40 a few years ago. It's an alright wheel I suppose but I'd imagine the G27 is all around nicer.

yeah at current prices based on my link above I'd go for the G27 however if it can be found around $100 cheaper than the g27 it might be worth considering

I can't really compare since the G27 and a controller to go by. The G27 is great, only nits are the shifter feels a bit chintzy and my mounting solution is just so-so. I've got a centerpole mount which is transparent most of the time, but every so often I hit the pole at just the wrong time and get distracted blowing a race. I had one that I built out of furniture scraps but it was taking up too much room.
Here's the current PS3 setup:

I have a G27 and totally vouch for it's quality. The paddle shifters are sublime as well as the clutch and H-pattern shifter. I have a PS3 and PS4 but haven't tried them with it, mostly with just PC. But from what I can tell and have learned:
a) You will NEED somewhere to mount it, otherwise it can be incredibly wobbly. It's super cheap to make something or simply adapt something so you can use it.
b)The feedback is strong depending on the game, by strong I mean it will wear you out after just 10 minutes if you're not used to it
c)The thing is just so much fun, and it has so many buttons you can map to anything you like
Hope it helps!

Haha, in that house it blocked unencumbered access to the dog door so yup, constant WTF stares. She also growls at the back left speaker when surround sound is on so unless I'm playing an FPS or something where those sounds effect gameplay I'm stuck in stereo. She's a bit senile in her old age.
Gratuitous photo of her and her squid guarding the living room from squirrels.

G27 is a fantastic wheel; to go up in quality you're looking at solid coin for a Fanatec Clubsport setup. The achilles heel on the G27 is the pedal, although the G27 pedals are a big step up from the Logitech DFGT.
tl;dr - get it.
