Does anyone have any experience in registering a former military truck (i.e. deuce an a half or 5-ton)? I was interested in one of the military hummers that have been coming up for auction until I found out you couldn't register them. But in browsing the auction sites, I have run across a few other military vehicles that have struck my fancy and which are much cheaper than the Humvees. Behold the M1079:
I think it would make a badass expedition vehicle to take camping and such, but again, no point if I can't get tags on it. I've seen some deuce-and-a-halfs on the road, and there's a guy who lives near my parents who has a 5-ton but I haven't managed to track him down yet and ask him about it.
Anyone have any experience with this or know of any resources? Because if I can figure that out, the only hurdle I have left is finding a place to keep it.

Ask Steve Lehto. He has a whole story about his deuce and a half.

Thought at first sight that those trucks looked familiar - DAFs or something - but no - they're specially designed for the US military with a strange (to my eyes spec). Conventional torque converter box and engine by Caterpillar.

Well, that's because it started life as a Steyr 12M18 but it has been reengineered quite extensivly.

Not so much registering them, but I drove them. And the nice thing about this truck is that it is isn't nearly as top heavy as it looks.

Thanks! I thought I remembered seeing a link to his thread in the Hummer Auction article but couldn't find it.

Good to know. Do you have any experience fixing them? I am getting extremely tempted to buy one, if I can find a place to keep it. But I don't want to if it's just going to be a giant money pit.

They are a good bit more complex than the deuce and a half that it replaces. It has more electronics and a modern diesel engine with an electronically controlled push button automatic Allison transmission. We didn't have too much trouble out of them, though.

That's also good to hear. I'm ok with modern, electronic controlled engine and transmission, and like any car and truck I know it's going to need some routine maintenance and such. I know some large truck/equipment mechanics so shouldn't have too hard of a time if I need work done on it. I just want to avoid something that's going to be a time and money pit.
I used to be in the Navy so I'm no stranger to military service requirements and such. It just seems like half our equipment never broke, and if it did you just beat on it with a wrench until it worked again. And the other half required more attention than newborn baby and you prayed it never broke because repairs involved coordinating 6 different shore activities to come fix it.

OK, good to know you're familiar with military equipment. I just know some guys are used to the old trucks that you fix with a crescent wrench, mechanic's wire and a hammer.

Yeah, I'm working through my contacts trying to get a copy of a service manual for one of these beasts, just so I have an idea of what I'll be in for if/when I get one.
