From all I've read NA rotories before the renesis are pretty reliable as they don't have any turbos to add to the heat problem and are much simpler than the renesis. Of course it's a rotary so it has it's own quirks and if it does blow there is always a V8 swap.

Make sure the motor is cold when you look at it. Then, have the owner start it and watch the exhaust. Smoke on startup means the seals are starting to fail.

If you decide to do a compression test, also take note that the steps are a little bit different than on a typical piston motor:
