I have the opportunity to pick up a free* 2000 Toyota 4Runner from a family member.

*Free +flight out to get it +gas to get back +new catalytic converter (reason my relative wants the truck gone)

The model in question is an SR5 V6 4x4 model with a 5 speed manual and a fairly hefty 250K miles. One owner since new, and all maintenance up to date (including a new clutch about 10K ago). I'm fully aware that older truck based models were basically cockroaches/bunkers with wheels, but how about the new(er) ones? Anybody have any experience with them?

As long as everything works, it was well maintained, and an ispection checks out, these things can go 400k miles. The 5 speed just makes it better.

We have one with 240k miles. The only major repair was when the catalytic convertor was stolen from underneath. The rear bumper cover is a bit rusty, and it needed struts at about 200k.

I would do it in a heartbeat. Might need a few things here and there, altogether reliable. My little brother has one, 280k+, runs like a top.

My father in law has a 98 sr5 and bought it new. He has about 279-285000 miles on it with no problems at all. Those engines are fairly reliable. I'd say to go to the forums and read up on them and see if there are any problems that people should be looking for around that mileage. Ive seen a couple with well over 300000 running well.
