That cops can give speeding tickets even though they're driving the other way. When did they get the technology to read oncoming traffic's speed?

*I didn't get the ticket, but my mom received a -$130 Christmas gift from the Ohio state highway patrol.

did she get pulled over and given the ticket or did she get it in the mail? Seems like a lot for someone to do to u turn to go catch and ticket someone.

Sounds like she get ticketed by the mobile speed units. What city?

LiDAR has always been able to do both ways.

The cop turned around and pulled us over to write the ticket. He's a Ohio Highway Patrolman and the ticket is for Brown County.

I've never seen it done from a moving car, though.

Looooooong time ago. I got pulled over this morning, but just for a tail light and no ticket. Crisis averted.

Alabama State Trooper patrol cars also have a detector in the back window, or at least that's what I have been told by a state trooper. I would assume if Alabama has it, other states have it as well.

It can't.

Police in Motion: LiDAR cannot be operated from a moving police vehicle. The police officer must stop his vehicle to get a speed measurement.

pretty sure that happened in the 80s. calibrated electronic speedometer + radar gun + toggle switch = they can get you coming or going

You didn't know that? Heck, a cop can even clock you if they're driving away from you on a perpendicular cross street. Most cruisers have detectors in the front and rear of the vehicle. It's kinda fun to watch/hear them (the lidar) get all loud when they've detected a speeder.

They can't, but many areas allow the officer to estimate your speed based on visual observation and his experience. Turns the court case into a literal "he said, she said" with the state on the side of the officer.

The last I knew, Wisconsin didn't allow this. There needs to be some hard proof that you were speeding - radar, LiDAR, timing the vehicle between two known points of reference, etc.

It's possible the officer timed her car using the road markings as a reference to determine speed.

Even while they're driving in the opposite direction?

you betcha. the toggle switch tells system if you're reading with or against traffic.

against traffic is radar reading - cop car speed

with traffic is radar reading + cop car speed

if the car is stationary, either setting will work. take the two numbers, do the arithmetic and put it on the 7 segment LED display. done and done.

Speed can be detected from a considerable distance in any direction, even from a moving vehicle. Many police forces have used airplanes to measure speed and issue tickets.

Something I've heard from the Wardens in the National Park I was working at the last few summers: It's usually not worth it to turn around and chase you down. The cop has to safely turn around (which usually involves coming to a very near complete stop) and then average significantly more than your average speed to catch up to you in a reasonable time. In traffic, it's simply not practical (or safe) to do more than radio a heads up to anyone who might be ahead of you.

My math as an example: If you're doing 70 mph, and it takes him 30 seconds to get pointed in the right direction, you're already a half-mile ahead of him, and it'll take him a minute and a half at 90 mph to catch up to you. If he can even go that fast, (traffic on a 60 mph road might prevent travelling at 50% over the limit) that's still a lot of time out of his sight and two miles of highway for you to turn off and disappear, for what's likely a fairly small ticket, but if traffic is light then it might be manageable. With traffic, likely it's wasted effort. On a divided highway where he needs to travel a half-mile in the opposite direction before turning around? Very little chance.

That doesn't mean he still won't try to come after you though, or won't radio ahead to have someone siting ready to pounce when you show up. On the empty rural roads out here, they usually turn around, or at least flash their headlights as a warning if you're just doing a bit over the limit.

It was a divided highway, and yeah, he was booking it to catch up and didn't turn on his lights or siren until he got right behind. He was being a dick and I hope that he got coal for Christmas.

I got stopped by GSP going the other way. Only got a written warning but he had my speed before and after he passed me. He said "Got ya goin 77 when I saw you comin. You slowed down to 69 when ya saw me and started speeding back up after I passed". He was about right too. I got lucky because GSP is known for being hard nosed on speeding.
