So for Christmas, I did my first oil change on the Focus Wagon I bought recently even though it isn't due for a change for another 1000km. But previous owner had the oil was changed at a quickie lube place, the weather was as nice as you can expect for this time of year and I had time to myself.

I also don't have confidence that the quickie lube place used a quality oil/filter.

Man, was it a pain in the ass.

Oh the filter and the drain plug are really easy to get to on the Focus. The problem was the last place that did the oil change on the car waaaay over-tightened the drain plug and oil filter.

The oil filter was especially hard. I ended up having to hammer a screwdriver through it and using that to get it off.

And it even bent the screwdriver. When I got it off, the filter looked a little less bad than this:

This is why I like to at least some of my own maintenance. I actually read what the torque specs for various things should be. And when I change the oil, I know the oil I put in will meet the Ford M2C930-A spec and the filter I use will be a decent quality filter (used a MANN filter this time).

Upcoming repairs... replacing the wheel lug nuts with new ones I bought from Rock Auto (the caps have fallen off some of the OEM ones and they're looking beat up) and I'm also gonna repair a section of wire harness that goes into the hatch door that has cracked with age and was "repaired" in a really half-assed way by the previous owner or some mechanic.

It always works, the wrench will crush stubborn ones but its not like you'll ever use them again.

Best bang for your buck tool ever.

It always surprises me how some of those quickie lube joints do nothing but oil changes all day everyday and STILL manage to do a crap job of it most of the time.

Also, was that oil filter a generic/unbranded one? It does look like that from the picture.

Can't go wrong with MANN filters BTW, good choice.

I had my oil changed at a firestone once when I was getting balance/alignment/etc. The next time around I changed the oil myself. Same issue with the filter BUT when I put the drain plug back in the oil pan was stripped. Not the plug, but the pan itself. Luckily I was able to use an oversized plug to recut the grooves. Also my car is lowered so the ramps it was on only put a couple of inches between me and said vehicle.

I absolutely hate that - there is no excuse for it. We had an Oil Can Henry's shop strip the pan on a 92 Accord my wife had for a while. They said the routinely use airguns to tighten things and never had any problems. BS - stop cockin' around like a nascar tire changer.

You need one of these. There's no. Room on the focus to get a wrench that grabs the side. http://www.google.com/shopping/produ…

There's tons of room to get to the oil filter because mine is a newer one with the Mazda-based engine.

The older ones with the CVH or Duratec engine had the hard-to-reach oil filter. It was the same deal on the Ford Escort (owned two of them in the past).

"They said the routinely use airguns to tighten things and never had any problems."

Yeah... total bullshit... especially on cars with aluminum oil pans. The truth is there were never any problems that they will ever admit to.

The picture was just a picture I grabbed off the web. But yeah... it was a generic/unbranded one.

When it comes to filters, I avoid unbranded and avoid Fram. I try to stick with Wix, Mann or Purolator.
