The new Ariel Nomad, due to be shown on January 9th at the Autosport show, will keep the Ariel road car ethos alive, but with an off-road twist. It certainly looks more badass than the Atom.

the Nomad will also have greatly enhanced ground clearance, gumball tyres, long-travel suspension and new, very comprehensive rollover protection - to make a car ideal for recreational driving on forest tracks and challenging off-road courses, or for competition in rallies for two-wheel-drive cars.

Like the Atom's, the suspension is wide-tracked and all-independent, but the hardware and geometry are new because the bigger, longer-travel suspension units need a bulkier outboard layout. However, running gear such as the instruments, switchgear, pedal box and wiring are familiar from the Atom.

The Nomad should weight in the range of 700 kilograms and pack around 200 bhp on its way to a £30,000 price point, or around $46.5k in juicy American change.

Capacity is understood to be about 2.4 litres, with about 200bhp plus plenty of low-end torque. The standard gearbox is Honda's familiar manual six-speeder, and the Nomad will have a standard mechanical limited-slip differential, with more sophisticated set-ups available on the options list.

So this or the Atom?

Oh my. I've driven an atom and it was great fun, I imagine this on a rally stage would be equally entertaining. I want one.

Well, as they've decided to build one, I imagine so.

Please create a spec rally series. Please please please. It would be 100x better than running production spec Ford Fiestas, while costing half as much.
