I like to hypothetical car shop. I don't think I'm alone in doing it, but it's certainly uncommon outside of the car community.

Outside of eBay and Craigslist, I solely use Cars.com. I think Autotrader has an incredibly unintuitive design and annoying to use. Yet, I find a lot of people I know using only Autrader.

What do you use?

Ex.

Cars.com:

Autotrader:

Autotrader can be a pain, but I always thought that it had more listings in my area (PHL). Autotrader for me.

I only go to craigslist. The used cars I want are usually stupid cheap beaters. Autotrader and cars seem like good places to go for something you can (maybe) rely on.

I'm a Craigslist guy too, mainly because it usually has more interesting cars, but if I got to another site it's Cars.com

Autotrader/cars.com etc are all pathetic lead generation tools for car dealers, and they aren't even good to the dealers they serve. If you like buying from dealers, just go to the dealer and shop there. More fun anyhow

Cars.com is better for used dealer inventory, autotrader is better for mid-high end private party sellers. Craigslist for beaters and weird local sellers who have no clue what they'e doing. Ebay for odd-balls. Forums finding decent condition cars that are usually molested on the other sites.

I use all the things.

And Searchtempest for car parts or just about anything.

I spent A LOT of time searching on both when I was shopping for a car the last year or so. I actually ended up finding my car on cars.com but I found a lot of good links on both. I know for me, I immediately eliminate all dealers from ANY car search. That is why Craigslist was really my favorite source, but I definitely liked cars.com and autotrader equally. I would say that no matter what, you should use every resource available rather than just one or the other.

I like the idea of this site, but there is no way to filter things easily. Cars.com is the only one that I can filter things like manual trans, the exact car model, body style, etc. And then for the others, it just gives a messy list or a link to look at the results on the respective pages. This is probably due to each website using its own formats, but it ends up making autotempest not that useful.

I like Autotrader's search page better, as it has more options, but Autotrader always crashes or fucks up in some way. So cars.com it is.

Craigslist and Cargurus all the way.
