I first started noticing this trend about ten years ago when I had my old Honda Accord "midsize" car and noticed that it was smaller than the then-current "compact" cars.

This. My IS300's a Smart compared to my mother-in-law's Camry.

Yep my "Midsize" 96 Legacy is tiny compared to the "compact" cars now. I had a huge laugh when someone at work with a brand new legacy parked next to me the other day.

You should see Charlie next to some modern cars. It looks like a 3/4 scale car.

Someone should take a picture of the original Dodge Caravan next to the new ones.

I dislike that "add lightness" is not part of most newer cars. It's all about safety I suppose, but it still irks me. Even looking at how big the Honda Civic has gotten amazes me. Adding more horsepower doesn't solve the problem!

The current generation Fiesta sedan is longer, wider and taller than my 2002 Focus ZTS!

I think we're repeating the 70s. Big boxy sedans with meh interiors and sloppy handling, pulled by engines that can barely move the beast because efficiency/emissions.

Back in 2009, my dad traded his '05 TL in for a new Accord, and he replaced it with a 528i a year later because he kept underestimating how big it was. A 2010 5 series was more manageable than an Accord. Just think about that for a sec.

He has the current Accord Touring now because he kept crashing the BMW (which isn't entirely his fault-that car was cursed). AND IT'S EVEN BIGGER! I'm not sure if it's actually bigger or it just feels that way. I'm supposed to get it in college, but honestly I'm not sure that car will last that long.

We have a 2014 Mazda6 and it's shocking how big the car is compared to the mid-size '91 Accord we owned years ago.

The thing is, we moved to the Mazda6 from a 2008 Honda Odyssey. Now you want to talk about a freakin' barge. That thing was huge!

The modern minivan was created in the '80s because passenger versions of full-size cargo vans were thought to be too big and unwieldy to use as family cars, but I noticed awhile ago that the current Dodge Caravan is actually larger than an early '80s Ram van, which would seem to negate the need for a "mini" van in the first place.
