I saw Lewis Hamilton's winning F1 car a week after he won the championship in London.

That's a pretty funky front.
I really do wonder - what would happen if there was a racing league where the only restriction was engine displacement - say 1.0 L? Anything else is allowed. My beef with F1 and related series is that they are so restricted from an engineering perspective. I'd love to see what people could do with things like active aero and automatic transmissions.

You're basically describing the Williams FW15 that dominated F1 before it was banned. Designed by Adrian Newey, active suspension, semi-auto trams that had an automatic mode. Dominated the field and was faster than the car that succeeded it.

I think with a proper restriction in place, there could be some really interesting developments. Suppose displacement was capped at 1.0L, but there could be a bunch of different series of racing - endurance, shorter sprints (e.g.: 100 km), rally, etc. With a wide variety of races like that, I think there'd be a much better chance of the tech dribbling down into the consumer market.

I think LMP1 might be a better route for tech to trickle down to the consumer market. It allows different types of engines, hybrid tech, turbo tech, diesel, V6, V8, etc. all in one field. I mean Porsche was already successful in doing that with the 918.

You would see an even more processional racing series.
