In my !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! I wrote about my installation of new springs. Had a few ups, and a few downs. Well, two days ago I fixed it by spending under $4 at Home Depot. Drove the old strut pin out with a hammer and some PB, then put a bolt in the other direction with proper hardware.

So, I did what I've been waiting for. Went for a drive. Well, had to jump my car, then I could drive it. And, I thought with the new springs it would be more planted and predicable. Well, just the opposite. It seemed to be really sensitive and bouncy. Didn't evoke confidence in corners like I was expecting. Now, I'd like to know if an alignment will solve most of this. The springs are lowering and stiffer. I'm assuming that I'm driving on the edge of the tires, thus giving me less contact and a less stable ride. Any thoughts?

did it feel too firm or too soft?

It's possible the springs are a little too stiff. Do you happen to know the difference in spring rate between new and old?

I had simmilar experience in e36 ti. First replacement, HD springs (poor roads,no stance allowed) new bilstein shocks etc....and added oem rear swaybar from 6cyl.version. I didn't know how much difference replacement of so many parts will do but to sum it up, car was bouncy, much better grip on good twisted roads, no comfort and rear was too high(same springs where recomended by producer for sedan, touring, coupe but compact/ti is much lighter in rear and has lower load on rear axle so I've made a mistake in choosing springs. Second pair was also brand new , aftermarket with oem spec (stiffnes etc,), rear went down to oryginal height (same shocks as before and swaybar), result was better than before , less body roll , ride wasn't that rough. I thought that I can live with it and on every forum (different carmakers funclubs) I found information that with time and mileage that specific maker spring will sag a bit and get comfy. After half year of DD my car everything was as the day those springs came on. Probably if I use it for driving with 3 or 4 people those spring would finally be less bouncy and softer. I knew it won't happen so by chance I finally bought pair of used H&R pink lowering springs in good shape. Ride height is the same as M-technic ones for my car and though they are lower and stiffer, comfort and dumping pot holes and other obstacles appeard to be possible for my rear axle:) Because of replacing front suspension and other things between all that nonsense with rear axle, bimmer went probably 2 times through alignment . It didn' change a thing.

To sum it up, key for my problems was buying used springs (2 pairs mentioned before where not cheap, second ones still are hidden somewhere in my livingroom, I don't have time to sell them and I was't sure if lowering spring will do any good)

If you want to fix the hard ride, put in softer springs. If you want to fix the bounce, put in firmer shocks.

My thoughts are that you should go to the OEM shock/spring settings, but have polyurethane bushings that are harder than OEM specs.

And if you're concerned you're driving on the edge of your tires, mark some chalk across the tire treads, drive a bit and see where the chalk got rubbed off and where it didn't.

No, but I know that with the springs I purchased, the recommended strut/shock are the HDs, not sports. I also know someone else with the same exact setup.
