Maybe you splurged and rented that exotic for a day. Maybe your best friend's dad's cousin let you have the keys to his prewar Cadillac one time. Or maybe you live the dream and own your favorite car in the world. What's the coolest, weirdest, fastest, or rarest car you've been lucky enough to get your hands on, and how did you do it?
Personally, I became a gearhead more through my own curiosity than anything else. I went to NAIAS every year growing up, but other than that I wasn't involved in any events or exposed to many people who owned anything interesting/exciting (one of the reasons I started on Oppo). So to get my hands on something fun, I had to engineer it myself through a visit to the dealer and a bit of disingenuousness.
I know it's kind of an asshole move to test drive cars you have no intention of buying and waste people's time, but I always recommend the dealership if I know people who are actually looking and I try to go off peak hours. Anyways, in a fit of boredom last spring I was able to convince some salesman that I was very seriously interested in buying an S63 AMG. After going through his song and dance for a few days, he finally let me take it home for a while. I had this baby for six hours, and pretty much spent the entire time in the car. I had my fun, watched a bit of a movie in the front seat with a friend, returned it fully gassed up (I'm not a complete jerk), and told the salesman I was going to pass.
Here's a picture of me with the car (and with some silly looking windblown hair)
What's your story Oppo?

Has to be this.
It was glorious. My parents bought me a track day for christmas which gave me 3 laps in a ferrari 360 (which broke) an Audi R8 which was awesome and the atom which was the best thing I've ever driven.
No power brakes which shocks you into the first turn after driving the Audi which had a fairly light brake pedal. Likes to pivot and oversteer slightly but very controllable and ridiculously fast.

First car was a 1999 BMW 750il, with a V12. It was also my brothers' first car, and thanks to them the damn thing died of a transmission failure in the school parking lot three weeks after I got it. Then I got a CRV with a pitiable 4banger. Blech.

ironically, my car, becuase mercury is slightly nicer than ford, has more features than my moms car even though hers is 5 years newer. automatic climate control (manual climate control on my moms), headphone jacks in the back (nothing in the back of hers), air vents in the back (only air vents in the front of hers). a compass, a thermometer, a little readout screen on the center console with status of the car, mpg, wiper fluid level, engine temp etc.

It's totally something else, especially since it's not really tuned for brute power as it is warm butter smoothness (+/- 300HP out of a 5ish liter V12, when it was new). It will pull like a train, but it doesn't have that "heavy" power that you get out of an American V8 of a Honda/BMW V6. It just...moved like the wind was pushing it. I don't really know how to describe it in proper terms, really.
Surprisingly, it didn't guzzle gas nearly as badly as one might think. I got low 20s mpg highway, but I'll confess to being somewhat of a pussyfoot. My brothers have lead feet (probably those damn Nikes :P) and would get something ridiculous like 15 on a good day :P

When I sold real estate long ago, a client had one of these:
Fortunately she realized that I could not not drive it, so I got a few evenings with it. Dash lights were an iffy proposition at best, so I blasted down a few country roads having no idea how fast I was going. This red, black interior, inline 6, 4 speed. Other than a '76 BMW 2002, no car has impressed me more.

Yeah the acceleration in an engine designed for smoothness is really something else. I've driven a handful of Mercedes V8s now, and I know exactly what you're talking about when you say "like the wind was pushing it". Of course the effect would probably be magnified in a V12. When I drove the AMG I think I was pushing below 10 mpg haha

On a related note, there was a time when my parents were on vacation so I drove dad's 525i everywhere. One day I let my 17 year old sister drive it, and after a couple of miles she turned to me and said, " my god, this is better than sex... "

I drove a NASCAR car this summer. We had many hot rods so it's hard to pin point the coolest. My favorite was my mom's 65 mustang. No power steering or brakes. A T-bucket (don't remember year). It was essentially an over built 350 strapped to a frame and seat. There was a super bee, way too fast fox bodies, and a couple el caminos. A wide variety.

Both were hilarious fun, the full throttle shift from first to second in the M5 (500hp+ mode with everything else set to "grrrr, I'm a racecar") is downright terrifying, and considering the weight it is amazingly well sorted chassis. I'd still rather have and E92 though, swapped cars for a bit with a friend who has one. I honestly can't think of anything better if you can only have one car.
As for the Corvair, I spun it twice. RR is such a trip to get used to driving.

I once rented an F430 next to the Factory in Maranello and drove it around town, with the top down of course. At one point (I will always remember this moment) the guy decked out in Pirelli/Ferrari gear that accompanies you to make sure you don't fuck up, told me in broken english to stop in the middle of the road. He then instructed me, after much confusion about why he was demanding I go slower, to floor it and shift at redline. We held up traffic for an instant and proceeded to spin the tires and shot to 100mph very, very quickly. The sound. My God, the sound was incredible. I should also mention that it was a 10min rental. I forked over 100 of my hard earned dollars for the experience.
But yah, flooring a Ferrari in Italy is up there.

I've gotten behind the wheel of some cool stuff my dad has been looking at, mostly German and American high performance sedans and SUVs. The longer list, though, and this is the sad part, is the list of cars owned by people we know who have told my dad to bring me over to to drive them, and my dad never has. I was lucky enough to drive 84 Corvette to my prom. Thought I was the coolest kid on Earth. Then I went to college and realized the world of cars is much bigger than my small little town. After college I got to build wiring harnesses for a shop that did SEMA cars for Pontiac. I got to drive and 86 GN that had been chipped that the owner let the employees drive on occasion. The weirdest was a super-charged 98 Buick they used as a test bed.

Restored cars that sit in garages, or private collections, are part of the problem. Fewer cars on the market, and fewer driven, means higher prices. Save cash - if the economy crashes again (and it will) that might be the time.

The rally community's great once you're a part of it. I wanted to borrow my buddy's rally Fiesta (located in New Hampsire) for a project, but he was going to be down in Tennessee the entire month. He tells me "no problem, you can go to my shop and get it. The key to the shop is under the rock by the door and the key to the car is in the cup holder. Have fun."
This was my garage at peak rally car acquisition. The only vehicle in the photo that I actually own is the truck in the back.

I think that's what they mean by torque, actually. That pushing feeling is the engine wanting to move forward. It can also cause the car to steer, but you kind of learn to compensate for it. The CRV's lack of torque is rather alien, I gotta say.
Most people who buy these sort of flagships tend to have enough money to pay for the gas. And the maintenance. You might be able to find an e38 V12 750 in perfect shape for <$10k, but that's most definitely just a down payment. Apparently, BMW mechanics earn somewhere around $90/hr, which is almost what a lawyer earns. Luckily, there's an indie nearby us, but you still have to deal with parts prices. Hence why we had to get rid of it.
I'll admit I'm saving my pennies for a used one regardless. At the same time, I feel kinda crappy about it because my family operates on the "To whom much is given, much is expected" rule and I'm frankly not meeting expectations. You should've seen the asspulls my brother had to do to get my dad to give him the car (in 2004ish).

Last summer, a complete stranger let me drive his Citroën DS . It was fantastic to get behind the wheel of one of my dream cars, especially considering how rare they are in the US.
I've also had the chance to drive a 6-speed E34 BMW 540i, and a rally-prepped Peugeot 205GTI, thanks to a petrolhead friend of my father's (the 540 was his daily-driver, and he built the rally car himself). Both were revelations, although at opposite ends of the fast-car spectrum, and I suppose that neither of them are cars that most people get the chance to drive.

I just picked it up after having 100k mile maintenance done, along with some very serious other fixes. Even being cold (NJ winters are mild, but still cold for a ride like this), I was able to notice an immediate difference in throttle response and power being put down.
She's in fantastic shape, and a dream to drive. This car single handedly changed my mind about exotic cars (it's an SL600 Sport AMG, not the much more common SL500). I made the decision to buy it because I'll never find another one quite like it. It has twice the mileage of other SL600's I've heard of, and nearly 3 times the mileage of the other other SL600 Sport I've ever seen in person.

The world is littered with stories like this. I wish there was some sort of "where are they now" for asshole high schoolers. Do they realize how ridiculous they were being, redeem themselves and try to avoid creating more asshole teenagers? Do they grow up to be asshole adults?

It seems like BMW and Tesla have both been having tons of driving events lately. Sign up and try it out. The i3 is a blast too!

The non-boxy Mercedes coupes just don't look good.

Wow went for the big one! Even better. Nice to know these things can actually hit 100k without exploding, as so many would have you believe.

I found it. It was at a dealer, for some reason I thought it was also in your family.

The high mileage 740il is tired yet laughs at advised off-ramp speeds while the v8 pulls with the best exhaust leak noise. Also I've been in a V8 taurus SHO, the yamaha v8 is a rocket with FWD.

Reminds me of a time I was driving some guy's SL, and he told "You're gonna wanna slam your foot down after we get around this bend."
And thank you!

That's my favorite part about this: doesn't have to be fancy or exotic : )
Looks like a lot of fun!

Yeah, I'm actually looking more for 3ers. Cheaper, lighter, and more practical for a HS/college student.

I'm lucky every time I drive the Series, if I drive nothing else for the rest of my life I'd be okay with that.
Although, getting to throw a XKR, XFR and a F-Type around an auto cross course was pretty fucking epic. Also got to meet Davy Jones (no not the Pirate captain) .
