So I'm getting ready to go party in da club trying to keep the kids from destroying the house. Last weekend we did the baking soda and vinegar thing and they had fun with that. Any on other cool things we could do? Anything that's some what time consuming and exciting?

"Here's a pair of tweezers each, now sort these sprinkles by colour so we can decorate cakes with them."
ETA: Oh, I just noticed you said exciting, too.

Box forts. Pillow and couch cushion forts. Paper bag puppets. Make homemade playdough (takes a lot of salt). Make sugar cookies or homemade pizza (surprisingly easy and delicious). Build a gingerbread house. Go for a walk/drive and see people's Christmas lights.

The cornstarch and water non–newtonian fluid thing is always entertaining. Fun to run your hands through, squeeze, etc., and not harmful if they stick any of it in their mouths. Add food coloring for cool effects if desired.

It's never to early to teach them how to browse Craiglsist for LeMons cars or a sweet old rotary swapped S10.

We're pro fort builders (pic won't load for some reason). I think we're going for an Xmas light trip Sunday. Its also freezing out. Well 35 but close enough. The ginger bread house is a good idea.

One of the first jobs I ever had was as an activity-leader on a kids' summer camp. We actually used to get them to do that while the fairy cakes were baking. I have no idea how, but we ended up with piles of color-sorted sprinkles.
How about a flour-bomb?
I think you can get it to work inside a paper bag, too.

How old?
When I need to burn some time and energy I do treasure hunts with my 3 year old. I'll hide colored post-it notes around the house and tell her where they are one-by-one. As she finds one she'll bring it back, I'll "read" it, and tell her where the new one is. Off she goes, wash rinse repeat. I'll have some type of surprise at the last one.
SHE LOVES IT, to the point where she is always asking to "look for clues".

My uncle did this with sawdust in a cannon about four feet tall and a foot and a half in diameter. Made a 60-80 foot plume, absolutely insane.

its a mess though if they aren't particularly careful with it, still fun though
the best thing to do with that is to make a gigantic thing of it (talking 2 ft by 3 ft in a shallow plastic container, then running in place on it.
