The only noises that annoy me are trains whistling in the middle of the night, if someone can't see the massive train headlight they deserve to get wasted. It's a damn train track, look both ways before crossing.

The Normans of the world deserve a cockpunch. I don't understand their mindsets.

I used to live very near the Interlagos race track. My neighbor was a divorced woman with two young sons.

That hateful woman would keep the neighborhood awake at 1AM screaming at her sons for no apparent reasons. It happened EVERY SINGLE DAY. Apparently the kids came from school, napped until 10PM and were wide awake until 2~3AM during weekdays.

On weekends she would scream loudly for the world to hear about how the buzzing noises from the racetrack were giving her headaches.

Edit: Same goes for people building houses near Airports. Dickheads.

Brooklands, on the other hand, didn't last long enough to meet Norman, having been ruined by The Hun instead.

-> Build new airport in isolated area near big city
-> People start moving in the area
-> City grows and more people populate area around the airport
-> Airport has to reduce traffic and close during the night so people can sleep
-> The world doesn't stop spinning because some people built their houses near an airport
-> A new airport is required to fulfill demand
Repeat

It was basically 'invade England because it ought to belong to us'. Wait, which Normans are we talking about again?

Hey, how's the Spit coming along? Haven't seen you around here as much lately, so I assume SWMBO is still on the scene :)

This is what happens at Laguna Seca. The track has been there since 1957, but the rich Normans that move into the surrounding hills bitch about the noise. That's why they only get 5 or 6 unrestricted weekends a year. The rest of the time, there's a monitor who drives around the track with a decibel meter. Bone stock street cars routinely fail & get black flagged at track days.

My semi-local 1/3 mile dirt track, Santa Maria Speedway, is threatened in the same way, and that's a fight it will probably lose in the long run.

Spent eight and a half months living in what was essentially a climate controlled shipping container at Kandahar Air Field. Didn't complain once about the F-16s or Tornados conducting engine runs at midnight, the Il-76's piercing shriek at 0300, or the MH-47s and HC.5s flying in low and fast all through the night.

My friends on the other hand...

It's bloody stupid.

We should start a kickstarter to buy the property surrounding Laguna Seca from all these Normans and then appeal to have the noise ban lifted.

Personally, I'd love to hear the sound of roaring engines in the distance. It soothes my petrolhead soul :)

Yep, hence the infrequent postings :S I don't have as much time as I did to be dossing about around oppo. That's considered rude apparently ;)

Spitfire's reached a bit of an impasse due to my utter inability to save up £1100 for chassis treatment. Anything £500 or less I can spunk as soon as I get paid and then scrape my way to the next payday, but it seems if I've got any money just lying around it rapidly disappears before I get paid again.

It will be done soon enough though :) currently my project time has been taken up with a diesel Citroen BX* that I bought for £255 with big rust holes in the front wings. I've patched those up, but there's a hole in the boot floor that'll need doing too and the headlights have stopped working...

Oh, and I've been building a garage :) I'll have pics of that up once it's done :)

*it's a nice foil to the Jag's fuel thirst, and the suspension goes up and down like a spaceship. That's my justification :)

Welcome to SoCal mother fucker! The perceived entitlement complex of the people whom just move to a new location with out research is what dooms everything fun. Both Tustin and El Toro air bases remain off limits for automotive sports because of noise and they remain unusable because of how shitty the govt. was to the land when they were active bases. They could make an awesome drag strip out on El Toro but they won't, they could also do a decent road course but they won't.

They'd rather have no noise pollution and street racers. . . Go OC!

On a side note, is the last Irvine CC event still the 27th?

One of the best things there on full noise weekends is listening to the echoes of racing engines off those hills. It's great. Especially if it's the end of a session, and there's a lone car on track that blasts a couple of big whoop-whoop downshifts, you can hear it echo all around a few times.

I'm not sure on the last c+c, last i heard it was the end of this month but i reckin they'll be able to find another location rather easily. I'm not sure why you don't get a cafe that could host it and sell the coffee...

Just wait til you've been married longer, then your SO will be glad for the quiet time :)

Sorry to hear about the Spit, I'm still waiting for a test drive - but I know that feeling. The money comes in, the money goes out, just like the tide - and trying to save is much like trying to build a dam on the beach. Well, as effective, anyway; building a sand-dam on the beach is fun.

I remember you saying you bought a BX - needs no explanation as far as I'm concerned. I'm still hoping you'll want to swap it for an MOT-less E30 once you've finished fixing it up :) (Incidentally, apropos of absolutely nothing at all, I learnt a new expression the other day: http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/kid_on_th… )

"Oh, and I've been building a garage :)"

Nice, I seem to remember that your idea of garage building involved something only a small step down from the work that went into the Pyramids, right?

My dad wants to put a workshop in his garage, so I was thinking I might clear it out for him for his birthday. I strongly suspect that it would be less work to build one from scratch. Either way, it would be easier with a bunch of slaves.

Hah :) we'll see about that :)

It is bloody difficult :S i'm half tempted to borrow some money to get it sorted so i'm forced to save money to pay it back :) it would also let me crack on with it now, rather than waiting months to save...

The gf has taken a bit of a shining to the citroen, so i think thats here to stay. Was he e30 a 325? If so, my sister's boyfriends been jonesing for something rwd so he might be interested :)

I know what you mean with clearing out garages :S the main purpose of this one is so that we have somewhere to put all the junk while we knock down the existing ones and build something a bit bigger :)

Well, you can keep an eye out and fix up another BX for me :p

The BMW's only a 318, I'm afraid, but it's a good strong engine. I've had hassle from the neighbours about working on it in the driveway, sadly, so I don't think I can get away with doing the full front-suspension rebuild it needs to pass its MOT. Is your sister's boyfriend the one with the 406 coupe? I wonder what my insurance on that would be like... Oh, right, only £900 a year. I think I prefer the BX :)

Unless you've got bored with the Jaaaaaaag.

Not a chance unfortunately :) i still feel like a g driving it 6 months on :)

Annoying that neighbours have problems with you doing work. What problems do they have? I it was me i'd be inclined to say they can suck it up and just do it :) what's the worst that could happen?

The worst that could happen is that the lease is terminated, although that's a very long way down the road. The management company here are complete dicks, and have been getting lots of stick from the residents recently for doing nothing. This is something where 'doing something' means writing a letter, rather than spending money, so they're all over it.

I don't think my neighbours mostly mind too much, but it would be pushing things to do the kind of overhaul that would mean pulling the front-end apart with the car up on jackstands for a few days - there are kids about, and stuff, and I'm not always going to be there to make sure things are safe.

How's the Jaaag been, maintenance-wise? I still see cheap ones fairly often and get tempted. They'd probably be in worse condition, though.

Yeah i get that. There's plenty of things on a torn apart car that a kid could hurt themselves on, and i suppose i've never really had to live with neighbours, so there's a whole load of politics i've got very little experience of...

Those building managers sound like dicks though...

The jag's been alright actually :) it's due a load of bushes and a wheel bearing, but nothing out of the ordinary for a car of that mileage. 10k later and a new set of tyres as well, but they were part-worn when i got them and i have been a little cheeky with the tail-happiness ;)

I know personally how much work is needed to get a dirt cheap one back on the road. It's sizeable, but if you spend a little more it'll cut out a lot of work. Even a reasonable one would be entirely driveable ;)

Oh gawd, I just walked past the XJ I've had my eye on since I was about 16. The archetypal old-man car, perfectly maintained by a rich guy who doesn't use it much. I really ought to leave a note asking him to give me a ring when he finally decides to sell it. Book value must be £2-3k, and I doubt there's a better one out there for the money.
