I've always been a man of many interests. When people ask me what I do in my free time, it's hard to nail done one or two things, and avoid overloading them with all the crap I do.
Lately, I've been thinking about getting a DSLR and doing a little photography, mostly at car shows and such. But then I remind myself that this is a bad idea, because I will most likely get WAY into it and spend more money and time I don't have. And that's when it occurred to me:
My hobby is hobbies. I COLLECT HOBBIES. I've been an avid performer of both rock and classical music, along with much theater. I bought a .22 revolver just for a little plinking, and built an AR-15 2 years later. Off the top of my head, I don't know how many guitars I have. I cosplayed at a Comic Con, and I'm planning to do it again. I need to keep this under control. If I mention getting into photography, shut me down Oppo! Tell me know! Throw an intervention!

I have the same problem, and have actually been thinking of getting a DSLR as well. haha
Luckily, my car and autocross hobby have been consuming most of my money lately. :P

I am also a hobby hobbyist. Embrace it—great chance to buff your ebay skills.

I got a decent DSLR set up for about $150 bucks from Ebay/Kijiji. Other than that you wouldn't need to get a bunch more stuff unless you get serious into it.
This is coming from a guy who does carpentry, fly fishes, ice fishes, does Oppo things, mountain bikes, hikes, and programs so I feel your pain.

This is me to a tee, whole pile of degrees but not a PHD of anything as a prof described me once. Sounds like a dig but I really prefer having a variety of skills.

I collect hobbies as well. Guitars, check. Cosplay, check - and building of a full-scale Dalek. Cars, check. Shooting, semi-check. Video games, plastic models, naval warfare study, reading, pen and paper RPGs...
I've managed to avoid the photography snare so far.

See, that's the problem. I always get serious. I would want photoshop. Then I would want a tripod. Then fancy lenses.

Let me preface this by saying that I've been a opponaut since I first appeared on Jalopnik circa 2006 (ages ago in internet time). I remember refreshing #offtopic all afternoon with the hope that someone would post a new Miata. I was an Opponaut back when Cool Cadillac Cat was the only one and I still recommend every GTFAC meme I see because of the fond rush of nostalgia it brings me. Nowadays, there are many thousands on Oppositelock. I was an opponaut back before Oppositelock was created (the first Miata website) and I had to post them with 5.0. Speaking of miata websites, I was one of the first submitters to /o/ and still have one of the top accounts there despite having migrated to TTAC nearly 2 years ago. It was on VWVortex and Hooniverse where I cut my teeth posting Miatas, way before I had a Kinja account and way before hashtags were removed in late 2011. Back before I could get any sort of points or even front page recognition, I was posting Miatas as a clever and easily digestible way to reflect on society, relate some story to my audience, or just be funny. Do you remember #tips? No? I do. You probably don't remember $kaycog'd, nibbles, Spiegel, History of Jalopnik, or #COTD either. I remember all of them. In fact, you have only submitted two posts to Oppositelock garnering a total of just 4 recommends and have not commented there any time recently. So please, respect my judgement regarding the direction of the site and the integrity of posts I have held dear to my heart for nearly 7 years but you have no strong feelings for. Thanks.

it is really the way to be, I have mastered a few, but I have all kinds of things to fall back on. And I enjoy the learning part

I only did a few events this year after I bought my FR-S. Next year I plan on running a full season of SCCA Solo in C Street. It's so much fun, and very addicting.
Now I just need to buy dedicated track tires and pads, a front sway bar, OEM crash bolts, and possibly some Koni Yellow shocks. haha

Wait, what? Was I not respecting your judgement? What was your judgement? I've certainly posted more than twice. And commented many times today.
I feel like something has just gone way over my head.

I know how you feel. I have a similar variety of interests. I've come to the conclusion that I like learning - learning woodworking, automotive things, cooking, photography, computer programming. I just need yo find someone that'll pay me to learn.

You made me remind so many things about the old jalopnik and TAY and Off-topic. I still use blog.jalopnik.com to go to jalopnik because it used to give a better overview..

Lessee, uh: Guitars, cars, motorcycles, boats, photography, SCUBA diving, sailing, kayaking, bicycles, reading, HAM radio, running, hiking, backpacking/camping, rockclimbing (indoor, but now I'm too fat), cooking, etc..this is in addition to random stuff that I want to do one day, like get my pilots license, get more into wood and metal working, and learn to program...
I am somewhat jealous of those that have That One Thing and they focus on it to the exclusion of everything else. Like the guys that can spend 4 hours/day at the gym - I get bored, but these guys can just keep at it.
Contrarily, I like to view myself as more of a Swiss Army Knife: I can do a lot of things, but none of them particularly well. So I embrace that.

Ah yes, somehow I forgot that Chevy offered that option on the '68 and '69 models.
