So my sister and her husband just bought a brand new piano. I am sure since neither of them play they price shopped one and got some off brand. I can currently go online and find one local I have to pick up, tuned, for free. I got my antique cabinet grand for free in fact (I play), and it is a gorgeous piece. How much is a brandy new piano worth once it has been dropped off at your house if it isn't anything special? I am guessing not too much at all. Like zero. So maybe your brand new (insert cars that bleed value here) Maserati isn't such a bad thing.

There are free pianos all over craigslist. You would have to be crazy to buy a new one if you didn't play a lot. Unless you just want a nice looking piano as a piece of art. The ones on CL tend to be on the older side.

I am not sure, we grew up in a house with a drop dead gorgeous ancient rosewood Wurlitzer (noone played) my mom gave away. I think she just wants something for the kids if they ever decide to try. Aesthetically I like the way older ones look, and I think in good tune/condition, they sound better (same with cars:) )

We have a baby grand from the early '30s in our house because nobody wanted to move it! I had to learn how to play, sadly it is very out of tune.

I'm not sure how I feel about the art piano thing…

I guess if you have kids who might play it's not too big of a deal.

these are just a few from around me that are free. #3 is old and sweet looking, and #4 is a player piano.

My dad's old Steinway just went to be with my sister's family in California. He played piano (and organ) for many years, but with age he's gotten tremors that don't make it very enjoyable anymore. He bought it well before I was born, and then had to sell it for a while, with the understanding that he could buy it back one day. It came back to us when I was in college. It's a prized possession, and will stay in our family forever.

Growing up we had a cabinet that we got for free from someone. I could play chopsticks on it, that was about it. This one had real ivory keys. It went with the house when we moved because, as was mentioned before, screw moving a piano.

No joke - when we got rid of our baby grand from my childhood home, we just gave it away. It went to a local school IIRC.

Given the surface finish wasn't perfect after 20 years in a house with 3 children, and it needed a good tuning, but still.

I grew up with and learned to play on a rather ugly Steinway Duo-Art upright player piano. Had an ugly '70s honey finish, sounded like you'd expect, but the player functioned pretty well. But it played like first-time sex and sounded just like it. My dad's great-something or other bought it in 1917, and it basically bounced around da famully til we got it in the '90s. We have a receipt from Steinway Hall that quotes it at $1100 ($20k in 2014 money). We have it to some cousins, who recently had it completely restored by a local tech for a few grand. Looks like it just came out of the showroom. I'd guess it's worth $10k, which is not bad depreciation for 100 years. Still plays like a rhino though.

awesome story. How pianos should be kept, especially an old Steinway like that

A lot of people buy pianos to fill space. That's why baby grands and spinet uprights exist.

If it weren't for the sloppy-seconds action on most uprights, big uprights would dominate the shit out of any <6' grand.

We got rid of it because I outgrew it...and my mom's decorator* (she's THAT person*) kept bitching about it. I mean, honey doesn't go with beige and green, but still. Luckily, my cousin's daughter's taking lessons and hey free piano.

So my parents had me shop around, gave me a budget, and my choices were split between a gorgeous used Hailun baby grand and an antique Mason & Hamlin upright with a somewhat retro floppy player. Both were absolute joys to play, teeming with character, and well under the budget.

Aaaaaaand my mom picked a considerably more expensive Kawai upright out of nowhere because it "fit in with the décor". I can't remember the price, but I just remember being completely -_- because I wasted all that time researching my ass off and annoying salespeople trying to learn all I could to make the best decision and it all came down to what her decorator wanted. I honestly hate that dude. Hey, free piano tho.

Joke's on them since we moved to a bigger house and it no longer fits the décor, to her and her decorator's chagrin. Suddenly, I like it even more. Stays in tune like a rock.

*not an actual hired decorator, just some member of her gay entourage that constantly critiques our house. Think Jack McFarland IRL.
