OK, so after reading SwissTony's post about buying his convertible E30 (nicely done, BTW), I got on Craigslist, as I do, and did some searching.
Anyway, I happened across a convertible Baur E30. The ad says it's "rare" and to that end I guess it's true - I've seen a few on CL so I know we're not talking unicorn here, but you don't see them every day either.
Does anyone have any read on these? They're sort of a half-assed convertible; I think they were built in absence of a factory model. Not that I'm considering buying one of these - I'm just wasting time and space on the internet, this evening...
[Also: Not sure why it's listed as a "325i 320i" - either the owner doesn't know exactly what he has or it has two different engines in it]

I've never really liked these. I've seen a couple around before, and when they've popped up on sites like BaT they haven't really elicited much excitement. This leads me to believe they're not particularly rare, just something unique that a few people really enjoy.

I know. They sort of remind me of the early XJ-S convertibles that had the rollbar. If we're going that route, I'd rather get T-Tops, which seem more honest, somehow...

They're Lancia Beta Zagatos for total boring lamewads.

:D
But, I concur: HNNNGGGGG. The E30 years seem to be the last of the simple, yet elegant BMW's. After that things seem to have gotten more elaborate...I mean, the E36's are very nice, indeed...but more elaborate...

Ooooh that's embarrassing haha.
I'd say I agree. I've never driven an E30, but I've driven other BMWs of that era, and they're just good cars. No fancy gizmos or gimmicks, but a highly refined expression of the basic qualities that make up a driving experience. They hadn't strayed too far from that by the E36s, but for me the styling of the E30 just seals the deal.
That being said, the newer 3 series is solid as well, it just has a very different feel and a lot more distractions like iDrive and stuff.
