From the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! that the new Tacoma's teaser shot has been posted today, I'm getting the impression that many of you agree with me that pickup truck grilles have become ludicrously large.
Not even counting the Ford Super Duty above—the ridiculous pickup grille champion—let's look at the "regular" full-size pickup trucks, which have all been updated within the past few years (except the Nissan Titan).
Press photos for pickups are ridiculous. They all feature workin' men doing work, or driving through the great outdoors, or towing something. Sometimes more than one of these at the same time. Unless we're talking about the Sierra Denali, which I had to try slightly harder to find a towin' shit press photo for, because it's the fancy pickup, and GM wants you to think it's fancy by parking it in front of fancy architecture.
Man, that sure is a fancy truck, it's in front of that fancy, empty building.
Here's a two-for-one cliche pickup press shot of the Titan, looking positively restrained with its itty bitty grille.
Although to be fair to the Titan, other trims have a big ole chrome section on their bumper, to make the total chrome area similar to its more modern competitors.
Of course it's parked in front of something vaguely industrial looking.
Now that GM has updated their compact pickups (and now they're "midsize" pickups apparently), you'd think maybe they would exercise some restraint to differentiate these smaller pickups from their big brothers.
Ah crap, they're BOTH towin' shit through the great outdoors with giant grilles. At least the Chevy's isn't chrome. Except when it is chrome.
Well hell, that's downright reasonable.

Because trucks are for people to pretend they're a BIG MAN. It needs to be big with a big imposing grille. Coming soon: a loudspeaker fixed to the roof that emits loud manly growls to other motorists.

I don't care how many MPGs these are worth, they look like shit.

If you're talking about the black trapezoids underneath the headlights, I don't think they're worth any MPGs, they're just where the fog lights would be if it were a higher trim.

Naw im talking about the 5" splitter hanging off the bottom of the bumper. Notice the chevy in picture 1 does not have the splitter.

Ohhh yeah I hadn't noticed that. I'm guessing it's not there on the Chevy towin' shit through the great outdoors because that one is a Z71 "off road" package. Can't have the splitter messing up all that ground clearance.

Trucks have always had big grilles, and they always will.

I've completely given up on attempting to understand the truck mindset, from both the buyer's* and seller's perspective.
*Exception being the person who just need to move some stuff.

IMO big grills actually work visually on trucks, I'm 110% okay with them. I can even see how some buyers (old white ppl) would like chrome. My problem is when the ENTIRE front of the truck is chrome. Like, really you couldn't try at all?
Here is some chrome I can tolerate just for sake of argument.

I think the easiest way to understand the popularity of trucks among people who just commute and run errands in them is to think of them as having taken the place of land yachts like this:
Acres of chrome, ridiculous size, and comfy ride. Plus an added dose or 5 of burly redneck machismo.
Let's chop some lumber and drill some oil and tow some ATVs and shit.
Or drive to the mall. Yeah, mall it is.

Those really old grilles match the shape of the radiator, and that 70s F-150 looks way more restrained than the current one.

I think we blame Dodge for this whole large grille thing, seems like they did it first.
Though, as ridiculously big as the grilles are, the match the butch style of the trucks they're on. And I personally think this crop of trucks is the best looking I've seen in a while.

That splitter can be removed by taking out a few screws, IIRC. Same on the fullsize.

I wonder what changed that made people desire to project, as you say, "burly redneck machismo".

look at how much of it (or should i say little) actually lets air pass through to cool the radiator though, i mean really these two chrome blocks of repressed femininity are only for truck like styling
