Hilarious, but I think this guy is a little bit off.

130 dB is still very loud from around 1 meter. I guess the advantage is that the duration is in the millisecond range. Like, if you fired it in a medium sized building (like an apartment complex or an office building) most people several rooms away would still hear it.

It's not an explosion. The powder burns and the rapid expansion of gasses move the bullet. The boom is from the bullet breaking the sound barrier.

That seems bad for a suppressor. Also the opening sequence made me want to vomit. Even in their video it showed that suppressed guns don't sound like Ray guns.

Indeed, though the noise difference is pretty good. I don't want a ray gun after all. I just want to shoot zombies and not attract a herd, you following me? ;-)

So, the zombies nearby would hear it?

Have you seen the adapters that turn old oil filters into suppressors? Seem really cool. The stamp follows the adapter and not the filters so once they're burned out you toss it and get a different filter. I think they were $200ish

You know, it's funny you bring up TWD. A few of my coworkers and I all watch and discuss the episodes. One of the guys was like "you know what I found kind of unrealistic about that episode..." He had some problem with the timeline so I shot back "I'm surprised no one has gone deaf from all the weapons fire without hearing protection."

Obviously this comment allowed for artistic license since we were discussing a zombie show.

Edit: I never answered your question. Yes, they would hear. It would probably be about as loud as briefly cranking a high end stereo to max and quickly turning it back down again.

You'd then get the zombie followed by them heading in your direction. The equivalent of a Zombie Dinner Bell!

Wow. No. Now I want one.

Mythbusters tested it too:

Pretty much the same result. I guess you would have to argue what the threshold of hearing for a zombie is. Though high intensity, it dissipates fairly quickly and if you were fairly far away, it's likely to be indistinguishable from background noise.

I'd like to test it but since I have neither a suppressed firearm nor zombies, we'll have to leave it to speculation.

I was wrong on price. Guy in video says $75. Tax stamp $200. Under $300 for decent suppression.
