The whole hiding the tag thing is out of hand. If you have a collector car collection worth 6 figures, and you want your location to remain anonymous sure. If you have a car that can be found in ANY mall parking lot you're just wasting your time.

When I take a picture of my car, or a car at a show, I leave the plate. When I take a picture of some random car, I put a black box over the plate before sharing, just out of respect.

Is it that hard to use Paint to scribble it out. Or tape a bit of blank paper to it.

I tried to take a pic of a car in traffic this morning, specifically BECAUSE of the plate.

A yellow Cayman with a vanity plate that reads "SRY OFCR".

(The driver looks good, too.)

No one wants to look up your license plate, anyway.

Here in California, you can look up the last 10 years of smog check results online using the license plate number. This can be very useful when looking at cheap cars - did the car fail three times in a row then pass at a different test station? PASS.

When I see people blocking out the plate number, I automatically assume that they don't want me to see the smog records, or that there's something else about the car that they don't want me to know.

Look, if you're trying to sell your car, you already have to fight the stigma that you're an extra dishonest version of Cal Worthington. Going out of your way to hide information from potential buyers is the exact opposite of what you need to do.

I'm preaching to the choir here, I know.

I normally block the Montego's.

But only because it's a rather oddball rare car. Despite clearly not being a 6 figure car.

I'm always happy to show the car/give people rides/start it up for them so it's not a big deal if someone wants to look me up, but I don't feel great about leaving the plate visible.

I don't do this shit though - I have photoshop.

I find it extra annoying when they use their fist to block it out, instead of just a finger. Oh, yeah, you're a real bad-ass dude, you can make a fist. So impressed.
