brim the tank. drive 10 miles. determine MPG by adding gas at same pump.

Or use your trip computer (hint: gas gauge)

If you had a 95+, I'd suggest getting a OBDII reader and a diagnostics app, those calculate it on the fly.

'96 and up isn't it? Some '95 model year vehicles may have had it, but mine does not, and damn do I wish it did.

all cars made in 1995 and up for North America require OBDII. they can be a 1995 model year too.

Can be a '95, but wasn't implemented until '96. http://www.obdii.com/background.htm…

Even some electric cars don't reach 50mpg-e.

Hypermiling, downhill, your children pushing the car... maybe possible.

But old school measuring like PetarVN suggest is the best way (top tank, drive to your hearts content, top it again, measure distance between each fill-up).

I'm not using fuelly to measure my gas mileage. I track my mileage between fill ups and just do the math. I'm using fuelly to document my gas mileage. I have the app. But it's not very accurate

Chances are, you entered some bad numbers. It's calculating your mileage from the distance traveled and the fill-up. If you always reset your trip meter and always fill up to the same level, you'll get more accurate measurements.

I did the math in my head before I put it into fuelly, I know I got about 12 mpg. Either I read the directions wrong or fuelly has a huge glitch

Considering there are thousands of people using it without issue, it's likely something you did. Is it possible you put the numbers in the wrong spots? E.g. Entered miles instead of gallons and gallons instead of miles? What numbers did you enter?

Could it be because I didn't fill up all the way? Here's what I put in:

Fill up 1:

You entered a distance of 145 miles and only 2.93 gallons....

Wait is the gallons box gallons used, or gallons filled

Gallons used. If you started with a full tank, drove 145 miles, and used 9 gallons but only put 3 back in the tank, that wouldn't be very accurate, now would it? Easiest way to keep track is always fill right up and reset your trip meter immediately after each fill. Then, when you go to fill next, record the trip meter distance before you fill, and the amount you filled, then reset the trip meter. Rinse, repeat.

So youre saying this fillup was a wash statistically speaking

Isn't gallons filled the same as gallons used? If you didn't fill it, how do you know what you used?

I've used Fuelly for years to measure my 3's MPG. It has been pretty accurate so far. Showing a lifetime average of 25 MPG with mostly city driving. I'd delete that weird fuel-up and re-add it. Maybe there was a glitch.

He's still learning to drive the stick and a 160hp truck doesn't get the best empeegees here at 5,200 ft.

Don't worry Denver, as you learn the intricacies, you'll see your economy skyrocket*

*it won't skyrocket, but you may get closer to 16 lol

To get the most accurate MPG numbers, you should try to always fill the tank completely (don't need to "top off" though). You should be recording the numbers that display on the gas pump (Cost/gallon, gallons pumped, and total cost) as well as your odometer reading.

If you think that's bad, I was averaging 18mpg out of my V12 a year ago when I was DDing it for a month.
