Post-WW2. It's a Renault Colorale 'Tout Terrain' 4x4. Produced from '52-'56. Based on a 'normal' '50s-wagon:
But with added FWD and rideheight. Picture from my Hour Rule has an even more increased rideheight, normal it's 'just' this:
Could be the angle though.

Has a spook appeal like an old hearse

I never thought it possible, I mean I 'like' a lot of cars but this one, I LOVE IT! I thought ww2 because of the white split rims but it was a pure guess. That last pic makes me tingly, I need a moment..........I'm back, Thanks for making a future (old) man happy.
I just realised my D40 nissan has a Renault diesel engine IIRC so that makes my ute a distant relative?

I think it's the other way around: The Renault Trafic uses a Nissan YD engine (2.5d) from the Navarra/Frontier. So the relationship is there alright.
The French didn't stop here. Although no awesomely high Renault has superseded this one as far as I know, there was a small company named 'Dangel' which did amazing things with 'normal' Peugeots. Hold tight (if you don't know these already):

Very cool. In Australia during the 70's there was a company (Overlander?)in Tasmania that would take brand new Holdens and graft a landcruiser front axle and transfer cases to them and raise the rear suspension. They actually sold them in the dealerships! Man the 70's were good! You could have them in utes and I think station wagons.
