Although I'm the Drivetrain team lead and I have plenty of parts to make for my own subsystem, I also happen to be the most experienced fabricator on the team and the best welder. Winter break is always our first flurry of work time.

That front bulkhead (the one with the square tubes) is a bitch. Took a lot of work. The rear engine mounts needed to be perfectly aligned, and even more troublesome, the holes drilled in it needed weld in inserts that then got drilled out on the mill (make sure everything was properly dimensioned and in the right spot, and the mill was the easiest and best way). Long days of work today and yesterday, and a full week ahead.

I swear, if you made a Locust, you would make the best one

Nice! I've been building carbon fiber parts for the last month. It takes forever to build a proper wing.

Neat! Theres a shitload of carbon fiber manufacturing for our team, and while I've done it, I just prefer the metal work more. Carbon has a ton of advantages though.

I checked in at my old FSAE team's shop about a week ago. They're about at the same stage your team is. We usually got the chassis finished some time in December while I was still there. What team and which competition(s) do you attend? I've only ever been to Lincoln with the University of Saskatchewan.

Seeing these photos makes me nostalgic. But, I don't miss the lack of sleep that comes with fab weeks. Good luck with the build!

Hey, winter break means no school which means no sleep with no consequences! It really is our most productive time though.

Yea our subframe and tub will be done by early January and the albeit very optimistic goal is a driving car by mid February. Realistically, we'll be done a month after that, but we're going to Lincoln this year in mid June.

The team has kind of gotten on this two year schedule where we build a new car and go to Lincoln in June and then keep the chassis and most of the components and go to Michigan in May the following year while designing and starting work on the following years car.

I go to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. We got 26th at Michigan last year.

I like metal work but had done enough of it on my Trans Am to be happy with myself. I love playing with carbon.

I just flipped through your facebook pics from Lincoln 2013, and I think I vaguely remember your car. Our team keeps telling itself it should be at least top 30, if not top 20 at Lincoln, and we were looking like we seriously were going to make low 20's last year, but some incredibly bad luck (which likely contributed to some rule changes for 2015) in our second last lap at endurance set us back to the mid 40's.

Wow here i was thinking we had it together starting carbon after break... I see we are behind the times on this one. Mad Props. Also fwiw we used your 2014 car as inspiration for our engine cover (you're at Purdue right?). You guys had a beautiful car. (saw it at Michigan in may) Hopefully the next one looks just as good!

Haha, I guess those guys did something right! This years should look even better than lasts IMO. Where do you go?

Michigan. I was on the FSAE team last year and moved to our Formula Hybrid team this year.

my team blew a chain on the last lap at Lincoln endurance and went from top 10 to 30s.

Yeah. Endurance is sure worth a huge chunk of points that you don't get if you don't complete it. I'm not sure our team has ever completed endurance, and we're usually pissed about it because it'll be something tiny like a drop of oil in the driver change area that there's no guarantees was actually ours. This year, though, it was a legitimate failure, but I've been asked not to discuss it.
