I just went for a short jaunt around the neighborhood to test my wipers. They're fine, But My steering is a bit vague.

Had your license for a week or less, already driving around while holding a camera. Seems safe

The steering in my Ranger was vague too. I think it's standard equipment.

Its impossible to place in lane. And on monaco southbound towards hampden (you know the 3 lane road that really should be a 2 lane road) its kinda scary. Today I thought I was gonna clip an accord, but that could be me not used to my truck yet

Either worn bushings somewhere or possibly slack in the steering box. Although being a truck it may have came like that new.

Possibly. If you ever feel like fixing it put the truck on jack stands and check for play. That seems like excessive slack even for a truck. Turning the wheel that much on my car would be enough to cross a couple lanes pretty quickly.

I have a feeling my tie rods are going. I'll fix it...... eventually

It's usually a pretty easy job once you get around to it.

Driving 100 miles isn't exactly "experienced" territory, but I digress. Unsafe driving is unsafe driving whether you've driven 1 mile or 1 million miles. Driving while holding a camera is dangerous, but driving with a camera while jerking the wheel back and forth when it's wet outside is really dangerous. And Oppo doesn't want to see you driving dangerously, lol

I was in a residential neighborhood going the speed limit for a few feet. There are worse things. I wouldn't do a 0-60 time that way. That would be insane. Trust me I was careful

Have you checked your tire pressures? Low pressure in one or both front tires can make the steering feel crap. The front end alignment could be out and give a shitty steering feel as well. These are the first things I'd check. Good luck.

I was also riding the clutch, hovering the brake. I could have stopped at a seconds notice if I had to

Ya I know it's pretty easy, but knowing me I'm gonna put it off till the last minute. My oil temp gauge is out, I know I need to replace the fuse. Trust me it's gonna be a few months before I actually do

Would it be possible for us to meet up at some point? As a previous ranger owner, I bet you could provide some valuable insight for me. Plus I want your opinion on my truck

No need for snark. I just wanted to document my wonky steering in the safest (albeit still dangerous) way

The steering in my Jeep was never amazingly precise either, but it wasn't bad for an original 300,000 mile gear box. I would have replaced the gear box if I hadn't killed my motor this summer. The Jeep at its worst though was between breaking the sway bar end links and when I fixed them. Basically I was driving with no sway bar at that point, and had very little roll stiffness. 10° alternating steering inputs could get it to start rocking side-to-side down the highway without actually deviating from a straight line despite it feeling like I was about to start picking up the wheels.

Sure, though it probably won't be soon. My sister is flying in next week and I won't have much free time for a couple weeks.

Tie rod ends/bushings would probably clean it up a bit.
It's going to be a bit like that in general though. It's a 21 year old Ford Ranger...
I've been in plenty of trucks that needed lots of steering management to keep them in a reasonably straight line.
