He's missing the Fedora.

Seriously mechanical keyboards annoy the fuck out of me. I can't stand them.

Because Amazon sells them for $5 and I can go all angry german kid and wreck it, or spill gallon after gallon of water on it without it breaking. And if it does, no fucks given, I can replace it cheap. It's the Foxbody Mustang of Keyboards, but really, any black slab cheapo keyboard will do.

Also because I hate having to deal with rechargable or battery-powered keyboards or mice and prefer USB ones because it keeps costs low.

You heathens. As car people, how can you not like a mechanical keyboard? Do you drive automatics too?

I have two of these:

Kinja'd!!!

They're both from the 90's and will probably outlive me.

No, that's the used Toyota Camry of keyboards. It's for someone who wants an appliance, not an enthusiast.

Also, the combination of a double-size enter key and a half-size backspace key is fucking terrible.

I hate automatic cars, all my cars are Manuels. But mechanical keyboards suck, noisy and difficult to type on. I've used this dell mechanical keyboard and it sucked.

But manual transmissions suck, noisy and difficult to drive with. I've used this Trabant manual transmission and it sucked.

That ancient decrepit bastard you had was a Dell AT101, which used Black ALPS switches (complicated version). Black ALPS switches are not popular because they're stiff (70 grams of force to activate), bottom out hard, and develop friction in the travel as they wear.

I use buckling spring keyboards because I'm old-school, but you might be happy with a keyboard using Cherry MX Brown or Red switches. MX Browns are a tactile (you feel a bump when the key activates) but not clicky switch which needs 45 grams of force to activate. MX Reds are a linear (no bump, no clicky) switch which needs 45 grams of force to activate.

That was unexpected. You are quite an expert in keyboards. To me, build quality and materials are one of the most important things. Both the Apple Wireless Keyboard and magic mouse are made of aluminium. Also they are the best for Mac OS X. The bad thing: Ergonomics suck big time.

Kinja'd!!!

Also, forget about double left and right click at the same time. That sucks big time for CAD, but can be easily fixed with a 3d mouse.

Kinja'd!!!

Despite all of the drawbacks, they are still my favorite input peripherals.

Magic mouse is so 2007. I ditched mine and got the magic trackpad once I used Apple's glorious multitouch for the first time.

Nice.

I learned to use a computer with an IBM Model M. I've had one of the Unicomp reproductions on the build sheet for my next PC for years (probably one of the only things that hasn't changed on it since I keep putting it off).

I have the wired version for my desktop setup. They are definitely good keyboards but it still kinda feels your just pushing your fingers into mush.

I also want a magic trackpad. I love the one on my MBP. But until the mouse dies, I will not be replacing it.

I wish I had a proper Model M. If I had the budget, I'd drop $200 on a Model M SSK. It's a Model M without the numpad.

One of the people I work with has a big clackity KB. OMG, the noise she makes over conference calls is amazing. I think I asked once in a big call, "Could the person with the jackhammer please mute their phone?"

Chicklet keyboards are not fun to use, IMHO. They look good on the desk, but they're not really functional. Even a bog-standard Dell rubber dome unit is more ergonomic than an Apple Wireless.

The Fujitsus I run have a steel frame inside of them. They're not as well-known as the Model M, so they go for $20-50 online instead of around a hundred.

Build quality and materials mean little if the layout sucks and the key switches are imprecise. Do you do your canyon-carving in a Lexus ES?

People who don't like mechanical switches are the keyboarding equivalent of people who don't like manual transmissions. It's hard to take your opinions about the equipment seriously.

And no, I don't wear a fedora. I prefer flatcaps, thank you very much.

But seriously, try a buckling spring if you can, or Cherry blues, or at least Cherry browns.

FKB4700 — now that's an odd duck. Even most mechanical keyboard enthusiasts don't like them. I ran one for a while back in the day, until I got my first M15. It has the illusion of feeling more precise and requiring less force than a buckling spring and just sounds so modern.

I know, hookers and blow are tough to beat, and gasoline ain't cheap even when it's cheap, but buckling-spring keyboards last a long time.

Had one of those at my second job. Came with a PS/2 Model 25. Nobody liked it because they "needed" the 10-key — the fools! But they still wouldn't let me take it when I left.

It was my primary keyboard from '92 to '99. I have a soft spot for them.

Though I want to get a board with Cherry MX Clears soon, as I've got a DSA Granite keycap set lying around that I can't use on the 4700.
