Year 2000 vehicle certified by Euro-NCAP

Unsafe

With all this talk about American amnesty and dream acts, you think they could find some mercy for a plucky British teenager.

does the government not realize how much money it could make re-selling over to a European country instead of crushing them?

It will only be safe once it's 25 years old. Because that's how it works.

You're angry and I'm amused. While I don't agree with the 25 year rule, you should have picked a better example to go off about. VIN swapping is a federal offense, imported or not. If he had have gotten it state titled, there would be less chance of it being crushed any ways.

You should have picked an example with a state titled, mostly stock JDM car to leave a bigger impact.

No, no, no, they should've bought a 2000 half ton instead. More big = safer, everyone knows that.

First they came for the Skylines, and I did not speak up, for I do not drive a Skyline.

Then, they came for the Minis, and I did not speak up, for I do not drive a Mini.

Then, they came for the Manuals, and I did not speak up, for I do not drive a manual.

Then, they came for the Convertibles, and I did not speak up, for I do not drive a convertible.

At last, they came for my non-autonomous car, and there was no one left to speak for me.

Vin swapping is also a victimless crime and a black market created solely because of the regulations.

It's like someone getting arrested for smoking weed they purchased on the black market in their home, and you say "Well, they bought weed from a dealer! That's obviously illegal so they're a bad example." If it wasn't for the regulation, the black market wouldn't exist.

The question of whether or not the regulations is right or not, is dependent on whether or not the committed acts to skirt them are victimless crimes and if the regulation causes more waste than help. With weed, there is still a debate with well-orchestrated arguments on both sides.

With 25-year import rules, there are very few good arguments in favor of them and the debate is not even happening.

They could save a lot of money on crushing by just leaving the cars in Port Newark overnight.

Importing cars under 25 is a mainly victimless crime. VIN swapping is not. The reason why it's a problem in the first place is because what if someone swaps the VIN off a junker onto a stolen car?

Kinja'd!!! GhostZ > Dsscats
12/12/2014 at 19:03

Kinja'd!!!0

Swapping vins onto a stolen car is the crime then, because stealing a car is not a victimless crime.

VIN swapping is a big problem in the collector car market. Talk to a guy who has been ripped off and tell him it's victimless.

Damn you and your logic. Still, it's the law and there's a reason for it.

Kinja'd!!! GhostZ > crowmolly

Kinja'd!!!0

The crime then is fraud, not swapping the vins. In the case of this article, the only ones frauded were the government regulation against the action, as he was not trying to sell the car as something it is not after importing it.

It's the same as if you change the stamps on a 440 engine to say 426 and find parts to clone the intake and pass off your Challenger R/T as a 426 car. Putting the parts on the car is not illegal and is victimless, defrauding the customer is not.

There is a reason, but that doesn't mean the reason is correct. Most of the laws are related to economic benefit, crime and gang activity, not actually highway safety.

The guy should not have broken the law, but should have petitioned to have it changed. Unfortunately, the average citizen does not determine how the government works and import regulations are very low on their priority lists. It's a tricky problem, but it's not worth throwing blame around.

12/12/2014 at 19:16

Kinja'd!!!0

Oh yeah, it's a silly rule, but Patrick George is getting indignant that the guy didn't follow the law and payed the price. That's what's silly about this.
