Well, they are the most different things to recently come from BMW. That has a KIND of beauty.

I know BMW has a couple inline threes but I'm pretty sure they've never made an inline eight.

I think so too, mostly because they help advance some interesting technology.

I haven't driven either car, but I've driven 80s, 90s, and 00s 3, 5, and 7 series (not all types for each decade) and the best BMW I've driven? My cousin's '76 2002. Instant and light manual steering, crank windows, red, black vinyl. 4 speed manual, clutch not too heavy not too light, perfect pedal placement. You could get it close to the limit on a back country road. Standard tires, steel wheels. No safety features save a seat belt, of course, but damn it felt solid. A few years old, but still had that great German new car smell.

And you are correct.

Like it or not, the I3 and I8 are going to set the tone for all future BMW products. From the materials and manufacturing process, to the powertrains, to the styling, they are the face of where the company is going.

The I-brand moving forward will continue to push the envelope of technolgy for the brand, even after the current I-tech filters down to the current mainstream brands.

Say good bye to your I6s and manuals and 9k rpm redlines.

^This. As someone who DD'd a 1976 2002 I can honestly say that the only better BMW (that I've driven) was my uncle's 2002 Turbo. The E30 M3 is great, and the E46 is a blast, and the 760Li is one of my favorite luxo-barges, but they all lack... something. Or maybe it's that the 2002 Turbo lacks basically everything which equates to a much more visceral experience. Either way, I wouldn't trade my 2002 for the world.

The 2002 looks so boring, but then you get in and, compared to cars of the period, bucket seats, perfect driving position, feel in the steering, modern brakes ... a revelation. Compare it to my dad's '69 Impala, and ... Chevy FAIL.
