What's The Dumbest Thing You Have Heard From A Car Salesman?

Once, I test drove an MP4-12C, and I complained about the shift paddles being mounted to the steering wheel, instead of the steering column (I like it when the shift paddles are big and stay in the same place, like the GT-R). The salesman told me "You're not supposed to switch gears while turning, anyways. It's bad for the transmission."

My dad and I stopped at the GM dealer in town years ago to look at the then-new Silverados (previous body style). The salesman who intercepted us mere milliseconds after exiting our car told us at one point the limited slip rear end worked by locking up 100% any time there was any difference in speed between the two wheels...

I post this every time this question comes up because I still haven't seen worse:

Fun story. Back in 96 or so I saw a used car dealer had a MR2 turbo in the classifieds and I was in the market. Drove over, and as normal, it had 'just been sold'. I told the guy I wasn't really interested in anything else as I was just looking at the MR2 because I was interested in a cheapish mid-engined car. He goes 'Oh, we have just the thing around back, stay here and I'll pull it around'.

So I'm wondering what it's going to be...X1/9? late 70s Espirit (they were dirt cheap at the time)?...Nope, it was a freaking del Sol. I'm like 'Um...that's not mid engined...' He ensures me that it is so I pop the hood and point and say...'No it's front engined see'.

He goes "All cars have their engines in the front. What mid-engined means is that it's the companies middle sporty car. The MR2 is mid engined because it's faster than the Celica but slower than the Supra. The del Sol is mid engined because it's faster than the Civic, but slower than the Prelude.'

So yeah...

The dumbest thing a car salesman told me is:

You: "no way it will make my dick shrink."

Dad: "So what? it's not like you use it."

I went with my brother-in-law to look at Corolla's. He would have gone for a Model S but it was 3x or 4x more than he wanted to spend. The Sales guy put down my WRX and Subaru's in general and didn;t know if ther was a difference in the engine between the typical Corolla and the Sport model. He said something pretty dumb about the CVT but I cant remember it.

Idk. It's a matter of preference, but on the GT-R they are always just right there. Left is down, right is up. Always. On the 12C, it's like if you turn the wheel a quarter turn to the right, then up is down, and down is up.

yup!

oh great, so it has the front and rear lockers?

yup, the button (its a dial) locks everything up centrally. (he was talking about the center diff lock that ALL cruisers have)

Um, no, i mean does it have the front and rear axle locking option, its a dial near the steering wheel.

Yeah, its got that button, it locks everything up from the middle.

Sigh. Thanks, bye.

when I was car shopping this year I had the slimiest salesman you can imagine. He had the stereotypical painted on fake smile and was willing to say anything to make a deal.

When they asked what I was looking for I said a manual focus. After about 15 minutes he pulled up in a fiesta. Got things sorted but no manual focus. Drove an auto instead. I told him I was basically choosing between the focus and mazda 3. He said they were the same car bc they shared a platform. That was true in the past but not anymore. He also kept going on and on about the McPherson struts, basically implying the 3 didn't have them and they were super special. This focus had rear drums and he said they were better than rear discs because the car would stop faster.

He pissed my girlfriend off because he kept calling her "the misses" despite her repeatedly saying we're not married and she has a name.
