Oh and that's a nice Safrane Biturbo, 270hp 3.0 V6, AWD. It came with a adjustable suspension too. People deemed the AWD system on this car one of the most capable of the time (even more than Audi's Quattro). That was a hell of a car.

Then, Heuliez came along and said - let's make a Jalop edition.

Kinja'd!!!

Manual, AWD, turbocharged V6 wagon. And that ass looks scrumptious.

This could have been an awesome car, if it wasn't for that rear... I don't know what's uglier, this one or the first generation Citroën C5 wagon...

And what if Renault hadn't used the PRV engine in the Safrane (the same as the Delorean) but rather a variation of one their racing engine, not a 600 hp one but something around 300/350 hp. This would have been a balistic missile aimed at the Germand and the Italians in the shape of a sedan.

And Hartge, the guys behind the engine in the Safrane, went crazy and put the same engine inside of the smaller Laguna. And this one was only FWD. Yes, those are the wheels from a Bugatti EB110.

Le sigh... Does anyone else feel that the Spider was a missed opportunity?

You're not alone. My general opinion on it is a solid meh but I'd totally drive/own the range topping versions.

Yeah, its the left field choice if you are looking for a midsize sedan. The E39 (and E34) clearly is superior in pretty much any area but I still have the urge to own something less self explanatory. I also like the Scorpion, Peugeot 605 and Omega/Senator, its a shame nobody wanted to get those at the end.
