Damn, that's a nice drill press. Weird that you found it in a dorm.

My dorm has been around since 1965 and since it is a university, it is really hard to throw stuff out. So naturally stuff just goes into permeant storage. We have crates full of 60s era vinyl and a mint condition reel to reel from when the dorm had a radio station, I borrowed a smoking jacket from storage for a costume once, there is some old equipment from the janitorial shop (this drill and a table saw), and a bunch of other stuff that they won't throw out because it's too much paperwork.

The benefit of being in a position of power is having keys to everywhere that normal people can't go.

Oh, okay, that makes a bit more sense. I thought this was just hanging out in the sleeping quarters or something.

Save the reel to reel decks. Those things are great. I have like four at home.

I have a beautiful Pioneer RT-707 at home. The one at the dorm has some gorgeous maxwell reels on it.

Wow, that's nice! I have a Teac 3440 1/4" 4 track, a Tascam 80-8 1/2" 8 track, a Fostex Model 80 1/4" 8 track, and an Akai 1/4" two channel. They're tons of fun. I love pumping things with sharp transients into the Teac and Tascam and pushing it way into the red for warm and round drums.

Oh! That teac is like the one I found. I love reels, I should record over one of my more useless tapes. Right now all I have are some mixtapes with late 70s rock and some super 80s dance music.

What series are you running the kart in? I knew a (pretty wealthy) guy who used to race karts and the rules were pretty strict. Engines were sealed so you couldn't work on them and gain an advantage, which also meant no repairs. Chassis's used to have to be within certain specs so if you bent one in a crash usually they needed to be replaced and so on.

Was apparently a very expensive deal.

It is for the Purdue Grand Prix, surprisingly a pretty major event that's very well supported in the area. The rules are pretty strict. I can only use the specified engine in 100% stock form, restricted fuels and oils, everything. I was looking and a new kart is like $1500 - $2000 :/ I'd love to buy a new kart and fix up the old one to have two entries but sadly my $1000 budget may not even be enough to register for the race and get the kart up to specs. I'm desperate for sponsors.

Oh sweet! That Teac and Tascam are my favorite reel to reel decks as far as smaller consumer models are concerned. It's not clean, but my good is it full of character. Eurythmics' Sweet Dreams was recorded on an 80-8. ATR are making tape again. Old tapes are a bitch because the magnetic element tends to wear off the plastic dries out and stretches/breaks. I'm so over old tapes. If you don't want to spend the money to just play, it might be a good idea to bake the tapes first, but that's just a temporary solution.

My ancient reels plus my collection of 8-Tracks has led me to be quite good at ghetto splicing tapes.

I found it really strange how pricey it actually is. The guy I knew had sponsors and ran a full series (I forget how many races) and estimated a 2 kart team was about £24k a year to run.

I hope you make it to the race though, karting is great fun. Does the old kart run or does it need a lot of work?

Bandit, you're in Indiana right?

It was crashed on the 8th lap of the 2012 race (after qualifying extremely well) and it hasn't been touched since. There is no documentation of anything from the old team and I'm totally flying blind. When I got the team the kart was in pieces. I've mostly put it together but have yet to get it to run. I'm super good at working on 70s GM products but 2-stroke racing karts are totally new to me. The shop was trashed when I got it so I spent a ton of time yesterday getting it organized (click on the bandit racing team tag to see some more posts about the kart).

I'm sure there are plenty of guys with 2 stroke experience here on oppo if you get stuck, I rebuilt a 70cc moped a few years back.

drill press, the one piece of legit kit that I own in my garage, pretty much everything else is just ahnd tools, SO worth it to be able to drill a straight hole.

Seriously this. Although as far as hand tools are concerned, I'm really surprised everything in the box kit I was given is Craftsman or Stanley brand. Whoever use to run the team years ago really splurged on tools!
