The MKIII Supra in Japan could be had with the twin turbo 2.5L 1JZ-GTE. It also had a 2.0L 6 cyl twin turbo (1G-GTE) engine pumping out all of 215 horsepower.

I'm too lazy to click, but what is he going to put it in? That looks awfully big when everything is all said and done.
Cool project though.

Sexy, but I'm confused about why they have the exhaust on the inside. It looks like they built it backwards. I'm sure that they know more than me though since they managed to make it work.

Mathematically, you are wrong.

1JZ+1JZ=11JZ. Yes. This one goes to 11.

The same reason BMW is putting turbos in the valley of their V-engines; it's easier to plumb the exhaust and intake for turbo applications doing so.

Yeah, you can do a hot V with it, but if you package it the other way, you can do two smaller turbos for less lag since you don't have to worry as much about the heat. For a tube-frame race car, I don't think that intake or exhaust plumbing will be that huge of an issue since it's a purpose built race car instead of a street-focused car.

Either there was some secondary reason, or it's something really simple like oiling working much better with one 60 degree tilt than the other. In fact, that's the most likely to me. I think they got the timing/etc. right by having the head outright backwards, so the block for one bank may be semi-backward as well - the whole setup is tilted similarly for both sides, in other words. The 120 degree config was chosen for balance, one assumes (it's one of the inherently stable arrangements for a V6, after all), and I assume the crank is common journal between the two banks like any standard V because that'd be best - which if the crank offset to cylinder from end is different between front and back is another argument for it being one block backwards - easiest way to have the conrods line up that way.

but...um...Toyota already makes a 5 liter v12 made from 2 banks of I6....

It might be for visual effect as well, but I'm thinking it's getting one big turbo too.

V angle doesn't matter on a V12 as the I6 is already inherently balanced. V angle for a V12 is either dependent on engine family architecture or picked for packaging purposes. My guess is that the 120 V is easier to fabricate and possibly needed to fit the exhaust plumbing into. As an added bonus it keeps the weight ever so slightly lower than a 90 or 60 degree V.

The engine is capable of running on a single bank of 6 cylinders should a malfunction occur.
Cool.

yeah, its basically just what this guy is building. I have actually been tempted on more than one occasion to buy a front cut and do a cruiser swap, since its the same transmission in my cruiser and would...with some mods...bolt right up.

V12s are often in 60 degree or 120 degree just like a non-balance-shafted V6. They don't have to be, for the reason you state, but if relative timing of the cylinders is such that it's (effectively) also a pair of balanced V6s, it should effectively damp the hell out of any vibrations attempting to start shit, even more so than just being a pair of I6s. If you have a second mode by which everything is first-order balanced, it's *even better*, in other words, regardless if your primary system is first and second-order balanced already.

I assume it is going to be mid-mounted, could have something to do with packaging constraints or maybe just because it is reminascent of old V12 F1 Cars

I've always thought that a v12 1jz was just a 1gz-fe since its a 5.0 v12 and the 1jz is a 2.5 inline 6, plus toyota being toyota they would just put two of there straight 6s together instead of developing a whole new engine?

Is the K-series superior to the F20C?

should have googled it but wow that means the 1gz-fe is real is that special for them to not have derived it from another motor

frome the little I have read it is. I dont remember why but something to do with where it makes the torque.
