I normally don't share personal, non-car (i.e. boring) stuff, but I though some of you guys might be interested in my final project for my design class. ("Design" is the main architecture class I have) The objective was to create an archive of some sort, on a pre-selected site in Chinatown. I chose to archive watches, because cars would've been too complicated, and the design of the building is based on the construction of watch movements.
Each floor has different rounded cutouts, with a steel skeleton underneath for support, and thin columns running from the ground floor to the roof. The windows also curve three-dimensionally, to create rooms and balconies within the facade.
I'm really happy with how it turned out, what do you guys think?

I think it's a pretty attractive design, and I love the tie in to the watch movements.

That ramp isn't ADA compliant.

It's fine on the way down though

I like it! How many all-nighters did it take to make that model? I've got an archie degree, and I remember well how painstaking those can be.

Great model. What scale did you built it at?
I just finished a final design for my Design class (main class in Architecture school, too). We had to build a pavilion next to some famous pavilions around the world. I built something near the German Pavilion in Barcelona, and informally called Mini Mies.

It's 1/8"=1'
Got any pictures of your project? I'm a big fan of Mies and that sounds really interesting!

Thanks! And zero all nighters:) Still never pulled one, and I think I'm the only one at my school to do so. It did take about 5 days to build though, I was working really slowly and making it look nice.

Excellent! I only pulled a few, before I got better at time management. I once spent 7 days, 14 hours a day working on a model. That's because I was stupid, and insisted on building the whole thing out of bass wood, instead of foam core.

Man, I'm still not used to imperial scales yet. I need to work on that. I like my 1:50 and such.
I don't have any photos of the presentation on my laptop, but here's some up close screen shots of my site plan. The top one is a parallel projection, so the distance looks weird. It's really 46m away. Also, SketchUp sucks for elevation, so the ground is pretty flat.
The program I chose was to build a sitting pavilion, and I designed a lounge chair inspired by my building to go in it. Kind of playing off the Barcelona Chair deal.

I like that! It definitely reminds me of the Farnsworth house.

That was me last semester...
Five 12 hour days in a row and 4 giant sheets of plywood went into my final. And that was all by hand, because first year students aren't allowed to CNC or laser cut at my school.

Thanks! Here's a few more of the building up close. Excuse the roughness, this wasn't part of my presentation.

That's exactly the style of architecture I love. Clean and minimalistic; the anti-Ghery!

We didn't have CNC or laser cutters (they existed, I'm not that old, we just didn't have them), so I had a crappy old miter saw set up in my apartment's porch, that's where I did most of that work.
I did that with four different design projects, earning me the nickname "Woodshop", before I came to my senses and started using foamcore, like everyone else. Then I decided to become a wood shop teacher :)

You did the right thing though! Wood looks infinitely better than foamcore for models.

It does, but damn does it take a long time to build those models out of wood! And that bass wood is not cheap either.
