Also the thought of Nigerians driving legally at 70 mph is the most frightening thing I can imagine.
You think they drive bad where YOU are?
I did a 3000 km road trip across nigeria. It was all like this!

Michigan? It's practically a straight line if you cut through Canada.

I've always wondered about Connecticut. Apparently our state speed limit is 65mph but all the major highways near my (I95 and CT15) are 55s. It causes so much extra traffic. Seriously once you get to a 65 zone the the cars seem to evaporate into the air but once you're back in a 55 they materialize right in front of you with brake lights illuminated.

Nope, southeastern Michigan. Used that route to visit my brother in Albany. Probably wasn't absolutely necessary, but my parents claimed it was shorter and it was always nice to stop at Niagara Falls or something instead of Ohio and Pennsylvania.

Didn't know Americans did that. In a pleasing symmetry people from here will cut through the US to go to our western provinces of Sk, Ab and BC!

Illinois finally got their act together and raised the speed limit to 70 but the jokers in charge of speed limits in Chicagoland are still suffering from suffocation due to cranial-rectal insertion.

The 65 for NY is deceiving. You can only go that fast on the NYS Thruway and not even the whole thing. Every other major roadway in NY is limited to 55. The Belt Parkway in Queens and Brooklyn is 50....

I didn't know that, cool! I know in MI you can get an "Enhanced" Driver's license that allows you to cross the border without a passport. Do they have something like that in Canada?

I've always made it a point to take the train into Chicago, but my GF and I stayed with a friend of hers in the far, faaaar burbs last January and made the mistake of driving there.
Fuck. That. Shit. Being in a floaty boaty Ford Edge owned by her parents didn't help either.

Just about everywhere around me is 65. A portion of it labeled as 55 due to the sheer number of accidents that seem to occur there (very busy on/off ramp in that area) but other than that, it's all 65.

So speed limits were set in Australia between 1974 to 1979 at around 60km, 100km, 110km.
As the years have gone by, the 60km has dropped to 50 for residential, 40km for school zones, the 100km has been lowered to 90km in some places, 70km in others.
I find this strange as, cars back then, compared to cars today were, in regards to safety, rather shit.
Today if you even sneeze you're enveloped in the pillowy embrace of 25 air bags, and if anyone so much as passes your car you're hit with a barrage of warning lights and sirens to let you know that someone, somewhere is doing something, and the brakes of today do actually work.
So with all this wonderful technology and safety we now have....why are we slowing down and not speeding up?

Yes. This was part of a Canada-US deal, when the US decided that noone should enter the USA without a passport. Canada was very concerned about this since all of us go to the US all the time, and thus by agreement between the two countries the "enhanced drivers liscense" was born! I have never had one though since I keep my passports up to date!

Yeah, the highways are definitely a "run with the Bulls or get out of the way" kind of place. I live near Naperville.

Ontario the same m9! They lowered the speed limits in 1974 and never raised them again.

I figured it was some sort of bilateral agreement. I think the enhanced license also allows you to get to some other places (maybe caribbean or something?) as long as you don't go by airplane. Could be wrong about that.

Naperville is actually where we stayed. Grabbed some Portillo's and saw that huge house with the insane Christmas light show.

Are you talking about the houses in oak brook that have a Christmas light competition? One is actually owned by Dick Portillo.

Yeah, 55 is still the "state speed limit" everywhere else except the thruway.

No it's one gigantic house kind of in the middle of nowhere with an insane amount of computer–controlled LEDs. They're called the Larsen family I guess. Here's a video from their youtube channel:
You drive up and tune your car radio to the music the show is synced with.
