Well, Toyota couldn't resist "Tucking up" the Tacoma a bit it seems

Kinja'd!!!

Expect a much more "manly" and "trucklike" exterior for the next generation of dependable small trucks from Toyota that didn't need aesthetic toughening.

At least they've finally put the trailer harness in the right place.

Kinja'd!!!

Slightly wider shot.

Kinja'd!!!

The stamped name is a nice touch. But given the design house is Toyota the expectations for a good looking vehicle are extremely low.

Im concerned as well. So long as they keep the weight down, the engines durable and the price in check though, im good.

If it ends up looking like a mini-Tundra I might cry.

You might cry. That's my guess anyway. Then again, it could end up looking like a pickup 4Runner, in which case.....yeah go ahead and cry, I will too.

Will the mud be included or optional? Is it imported french mud?

I don't actually hate how the 4Runner looks, the Tundra just has a big chrome maw that looks horrible.

Its actually a fine iron oxide powder they had left over from the DANA plant, mixed with Toyota's red coolant of course.

I wouldn't expect much. The powertrain will maintain current status quo, albeit with better mileage. I expect it to just match the new GM trucks punch for punch.

I'll be sure not to check that box on the spec sheet then. I'm deathly allergic to toxic mud.

And Ford basically copied the Tundra, sad.

My guess is: slightly wider, slightly taller, same GR engines with the Dual VVT-i (a-la the 4Runner engine, a-la the engine that should have been in there forever ago) and uglier.

So you expect the design to be full on bro. Because I do.

That's what truck designers think everyone wants, sigh.

Next truck for me is going to be an old one then with an all new powertrain.

I expect it to have lots of unnecessary design elements that are meant to "evoke the emotions associated with a tough truck meant for hard work and play" or some nonsense. You know what evokes tough? simple, clean...no nonsense lines.

Just in that little picture I think the truck is going to be too large. Then again, the current one (and every other truck) is too damn big. I want a SMALL pickup. What's so hard for automakers to understand about this?

Like a Mitsu Mighty Max

Kinja'd!!!

Or a VW Rabbit Truck

Kinja'd!!!

Or a Mazda B2000

Kinja'd!!!

I would think with the CAFE standards increasing so dramatically in the coming years, they'd want to build small trucks again. If you could buy something like one of these that gets close to 30MPG (which really shouldn't be THAT difficult), I'd bet they'd sell a ton of them. It's a pretty easy formula. Most people don't use trucks as a truck most of the time anyway.

Nothing says tough better than being tough. Or put another way, if you are tough, you don't need to shout about it.

Would something like this shut you "its too damn big" people up?

Kinja'd!!!

its supposedly coming.

I'm half kidding, but the other half is tires of people complaining that a truck designed as a recreation tool is being compared against trucks designed for light duty work. We may not like it, but the "compact truck" market caters to people who play with their trucks, not work with them.

While I can agree that there's certainly more utility for the working class stiff (who needs a truck) in a mid or full size pickup, I think most people drive trucks who don't need them. For those that need a truck to do truck like things, what's on the market makes perfect sense. For the weekend warrior who might need to make the occasional trip to home depot for some plywood, I think a small truck will work just fine.

Thing is though....for the money, its cheaper to rent a truck those few times than to buy even a small cheap truck. If you want a truck you want a truck. If you need a truck, you need a truck. I agree there is some room at the bottom of the market, but don't be upset if its car based and FWD. I'm not saying you would be, I'm just saying that the fat part of the curve for people who would buy a truck like that don't care what it is so long as it has the GVWR and the right MSRP.

I'd actually welcome a car based FWD truck, but I'm sure I'm in the minority here. Then again, I like minivans as the ultimate in utility vehicles. If only I could peal the roof off they'd be perfect.

I will agree though for most people renting a truck for the few times you may need it makes the most sense. But, people don't seem to have much sense.

No, people don't make sense. The BMW x6 and Mercedes GLE reflect this.

I don't even care if it looks like a mini Tundra, I don't mind that, just update the engine and give it at least 6 speeds on the auto. AND of course, it better have a manual on all specs like the current one.

My best speculation is that it's going to look like a newer version of the current TRD Off-road edition.

Basically, what you would expect if a Tundra and a Raptor had a baby. Add a new engine and 6 or 8spd auto, carryover 6 spd manual, and revised electronics and interior.
