In 2006, an F-18 cut a demonstration lap at Reno's unlimited 9 mile long course. At sea level on a standard temperature and pressure day, the speed of sound is 750mph. At 5,000 feet elevation and a slightly warmer dryer day, that speed gets closer to 700. This F-18 averaged 657mph and we can hear that overpressure bump as it flys past on the main straight as it gets riiiight there to the barrier, but not quite through.

Ooooh that's an idea for a Super Unlimited Class with Gen 2-4 fighters! A-4, F-4, F-5, A-7, F-8, F-15, F-14, F/A-18

They have the L29/39 jet invitational class and those laps are consistently just a tick over 500mph, pretty much their redline. Using Gen-2 fighters and not trainers would be horribly expensive. An F-4 Phantom will burn ALL of it's gas in 12 minutes on afterburner. 1,000 pounds a minute. that's roughly $900/minute of gas bought at the airport. They already have wake turbulence to contend with, I would hate to see adding in huge waves of sub-sonic compression to work with during a pass.
Entertainment tho. I'd love to see.

Great vid, thanks for sharing. Haha, I was about to suggest an F4 or F15 on burner.

The L29 and L39 class is definitely cool but not the same showcase of aviation heritage the Unlimited class is. It is too unrealistic to ever happen due to cost and insurance but it would be spectacular and add a lot of strategy to the race. Do you go full AB and sacrifice fuel? Faster means a wider radius turn so the pilot doesn't reach G-lock. A Scooter or SLUF doesn't have AB but can hug the pylons easier than a Tomcat or a 'toom. BoP could be achieved by subdividing the class by wing loading to help even out the field. As they say, to make a small fortune in racing, start with a big fortune; no truer words would apply to this class.
