This Saturday I spent the day at the Mecum Auction's stop in Kansas City, MO. It was a huge display of neat and eclectic cars mostly not selling at all. Since I didn't buy a bidders pass, I was safe to help myself to the overpriced booze
So, this...... thing.... was a C5 Corvette. And 800 hours later, it mostly uglier than when it starting.
Amazingly, this car was bid up to $80,000. After that, the "Bid went on," meaning that the owner wanted a higher price and the car didn't sell.
These things were everywhere; There were about 6 like it for sale. Most of them reached $30,000-$35,000 before not selling. Amazingly, reading in one of there promotional magazines, one ran through in Chicagoland that made it to $97,500.
This started as an 04 Ram SRT-10. The owner decided the Viper's V10 just didn't cut the mustard, so he added a nice Roots Supercharger. Eventually, the truck was bid up to $45,000 before not selling.
Is it a hot rod or is it a donk?
I can't tell.
Here we found a super clean, original Fox-Body Mustang. Since most of these turned into drag strip rusted out boxes, these are getting rarer and rarer. It was run on the block on Friday and only reached $4,000 before not selling.
Who buys a Town Car and only drives it 14,000 miles? Actually, who keeps a 70s Town Car?
This nice C5 Corvette was only bid up to $9000 before also not selling. I probably wouldn't paid $9500 if I'd gotten a bidder's pass.
Lol at the King Cobra: Probably the most unloved of all the Mustangs.
Pickup trucks are becoming super popular on the auction circuit. It's certainly neat seeing old pickups like these in such great condition.
I was the only one in my group that gave this a second look. I've only ever seen one other Defender around, and that was in our city's super wealthy neighborhood parked next to a brand new Range Rover.
But why?
One of two old 911s for sale. They're a lot rarer in the Midwest it seems.
70 Mach 1 Twister Special. It's a 351 Auto with Manual everything and no Air Conditioning or vents. It was bid up to $85,000 before not selling.
BMW Isetta. I wish I had seen this roll across the auction block.
After sitting in this, I can safely say that it felt nowhere near as nice as the Lexus we drove up in. It seems like an overpriced cockpiece that belongs in a rap video ten years ago.
SO. MUCH. MURICA.
AMERICA. FREEDOM. EAGLES. FUCK YEAH.
Pre-hisotirc donk.
Only one Miata at Mecum this year. It looks in really good spec though.
Some of you may know I had a holiday romance with the DeTomaso Pantera. But this one looked like hell. It was full of wires, racing seats, and sloppy welds.
After seeings and sitting in the two, I truly believe that I'd rather buy a 997 as a daily compared to a air-cooled 911.
All of this said, by the time I've got a profesional job and can afford one in a couple years, the new Cayman's will have depreciated and I'd buy one of those.
Jeep Pickup. These are quite rare from what I heard today.
I'm always really interested by normal, everyday cars that people restore and keep in such nice condition. It defies all logic, but its neat and quirky to see.
Baldwin Motion Corvette.
Wat. This started as a Chrysler 300C. Then the roof was chopped, a Rolls Royce grill was added, and horrible rims were put in place.
That don't fit right.
This is a 98 Vette that was 1 of 100 and something in this neat green color. It's also a retractable hardtop coming from the trunk. This 47,000 mile example was bid up to $20,000 before not selling.
This is a 71 Challenger convertible. Originally a 383 car, the original owner had the dealer install a 426 Hemi before delivery. The car fetched $115,000 before not selling. From the sound of the auctioneer, they weren't even close to the reserve.
Ford GT time.
This guy was drawing the Ford GT while we were looking at it.
One of the only cars that actually sold, this GT made it up to $300,000.
I swear, every time I would raise my hand to a friend or try to take a picture, one of these hawk-eyed vultures would come over, get four inches from my face and ask how much I wanted to bid. I didn't even have a bidders pass.
Overall, it was a pretty nice trip. I got to live it up like one of the wealthy old white men that were surrounding me without having to spend $30,000+. It's definitely worth coming to.
Afterwards, we went to the awesome Gate's BBQ in Kansas City, filled my stomach up to the brim with delicious burnt ends, and then slept through all the way home on the Lexus's heated massaging seats. Grade A day to me.

The wheels on the "donk" Chevelle look like Camaro ZL1 wheels. Those things are huge.

Yeah, they really don't look right on there.
Big swing and a miss to me.

I was at the chicagoland one. The GNX that sold for 97 grand had 47 original miles on the clock. Broke the record for highest selling GNX ever

At first I thought this was a 7 up car, but I think those were solid teal right? Probably would have went for more than $4k too :/

Great post man! Thanks for sharing the pics.
I spent a week in that Marriot a while back, that brought back some memories.
Some of those prices are kind insane.
Fairway green C5 if Im not mistaken. Made for golfers.

What did the Defender go for?

Not sure how Mecum stays in business if so few cars sell. They must charge sellers just for showing up. Did it cost much to get in and spectate?

7 Up cars were painted similar, but I'm pretty positive those were all LX's. They weren't two-tone, I know that.

Thanks!
Probably why this one didn't sell. That retractable top takes away the space for golf clubs.

No idea. I probably ran Friday. It had a sold sticker on it though.

It only costs $20 a person to come in. However, my beers were $8.00 a piece and the same with my pizza. I wasn't too pleased about it, but whatever.
For bidders passes they need some sort of line of credit. I was 98% sure I didn't want to buy anything, so I didn't want to go through that process.
I'd say about 40% sold, so they still make good money. They make commission of the seller and buyer, and they make money on ticket prices.

Yeah, I think Mecum and Barrett Jackson are the ones to go to. There's plenty of money going around, but the atmosphere is much more relaxed and rowdy, and buzzed normally.

$8 a beer? Jesus. Was it at least something other than crap mass-produced American pisswater?

Haha I'd assume you'd go for the Caprice. Or the late 90s Monte Carlo.

The caprice, maybe. More likely the Grand National. 90s Montes were pretty hideous.
